If your nanny is due to recertifify their first aid quals do you pay it all, half or none?
Am curious. Thanks.

MrsWobble · 01/07/2010 14:26

i'm no longer a nanny employer but was for many years. i never bothered about first aid quals or certificates on the basis that neither i nor dh had one but were able to keep the children alive and that for this competency, more than any other I can think of, a piece of paper is useless and i preferred to assess my nanny/potential nanny's ability to look after my children myself.

so, on that basis I wouldn't pay it. however, if you need her to have it so you can use vouchers or there's some other benefit to you then i would pay it.

mickytoo · 01/07/2010 15:12

Bottom line is that I would pay it all, so I can use childcare vouchers. I would however ask her to do the course when she's not working, and I wouldn't pay her for the time spent in training. I'd be very impressed by a nanny who paid and organised it themselves, so that I didn't have to deal with it, but I've never come across one like that.

LouIsWaltzingMatilda · 01/07/2010 15:18

Thank you. I am the nanny not the employer.
I have booked and paid for it but am doing it during work hours (I have to. No other time.) I came to the job first aid qualified and have used the knowldege many times in my position.
I am not asking my boss to pay. Just curious if bosses would offer at all.
Oh and no vouchers are used at all in the position.

well I'm impressed.

Strix · 01/07/2010 16:25

Hi Lou. I wouldprobably not pay it because I would expect you as a professional employee to keep up with your own qualifications. However, I would be quite happy to work it into your work hours so long as that wasn't detrimental to my work hours. If I had an extra hol I could take to cover it, I'd be happy to do that.

So where are you working now? (nosey smiley)

LouIsWaltzingMatilda · 01/07/2010 17:08

Hi Strix
Hows things?

But first aiders at offices etc get their employers to pay don't they?

Still at the same job. Had to leave my share house as the guy there tried to attack me. Had to escape out the window at midnight. POsted on here about it but was ignored .

Am heading back to Oz in December for good!!!!!!

i have always paid every three years to renew my first aid my current employers paid half each foor the one i did a few months ago.Have had to use my skills several times inculding three days after my course finished when one charge fell off a sofa and spilt the back of her head open while i was off duty

Strix · 02/07/2010 10:47

What? You climbed out the window? I take it you shared this house after negotiating your live-out deal? So where are you now, back living in?

I have no idea about employers paying for first aid. But, if it is because they employee is taking on something additional to the job they were hired for, I would think that's fair. But, if you are hired as a first aider, I guess I'd expect you to come to the job with trainng in tact. Don't really know how it works, but since I'm not a big profitable busness I can not afford to offer the same perks they do.

Also, I would care if you knew something about first aid, and not if you had a current certificate stating so. I'm more interested in what is in your head than am in in what is verified on a piece of paper.

LouIsWaltzingMatilda · 02/07/2010 11:48

I had to. He started having a go at me. No reason what so ever. I had just walked out of the shower so only in a towel. He called me a charming combination of bitch, slut, whore, prostitute, c**t, fat, fucking. Then he was waving his fist in my face. Absolutely terrifying. I thought he was going to hit me. His girlfriend just sat there and watched. I reported it to the police.

I have an new place with a lovely single girl who is not psychotic.

As for first aid. Well it is pretty useless. I know more from working with paramedics. It was just a thought. Not expecting bosses to pay just curious if other bosses would.

We pay for everything our nanny needs to renew the OFSTED registration. It's for our benefit.

Annner · 02/07/2010 21:16

Same as for fridayschild - plus the fact that my employer pays for my First Aid training, and as an employer I do feel a degree of obligation to my nanny's CPD (Continuous Professional Development)

BoffinMum · 02/07/2010 22:19

I would not pay. My own employer would never pay for any of my qualifications or professional registrations either.

I paid for last nanny's registration but she left us un the lurch after 10 weeks and I now have nearly a year's worth of ccare vouchers I can't use now, so that hardened my view a bit.

nbee84 · 02/07/2010 22:49

I see First aid as something that any professional nanny should have - so feel it up to us to make sure we do the relevant courses.

Boffin - bit late now but next time ensure that you have a clause in the contact that says that should the nanny leave part the way through the year then the Ofsted fee is to be paid back pro rata.

frakkit · 03/07/2010 05:12

I pay mine. It's a relevant professional qualification which I think is required by my insurance.

K75 · 03/07/2010 06:58

First aid is expected in all jobs, so I could expect nanny to pay and organize. We pay fir other things such as ofsted registration that is for our benefit.

nannyl · 03/07/2010 20:16

i always had mine paid for in full by my bosses and i did it during work time, which i was paid as usual for.

i consider this the norm for the many many nannies who i know, although i know some nannies who have dont the course in their own (weekend) time, which their bosses have paid for.

Karoleann · 03/07/2010 21:49

I paid for my nanny, but it was a condition that she stayed for a year, otherwise she'd pay for it. It was done in her own time though

nannynick · 03/07/2010 22:22

I pay for all my own courses and arrange them outside of work time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/07/2010 21:30

i pay for my crb/nanny insurance and 1st aid but i did the one day course

if i was ofsted reg (which im not as employers cant use the vouchers) then i have in my contract that the employers pay all costs as it is in their benifit that i am ofsted registered

lou, sorry to hear about your escape through the window but glad got new housemate now

tbh all the first aid courses are run on a saturday so i did it in my own time
