What happens when a childminder goes on holiday?

DD is currently at nursery two days a week and with a family member for two days a week but shortly we will need cover for the days when the family member currently has her.

We are thinking about finding a childminder instead of having her in nursery for the other days but what happens when a childminder goes on holiday? Do parents take the same holiday days?

What about if the childminder is sick?

Thanks in advance!

And, what happens when parents have holiday? Do we pay the childminder for a full day regardless?

if the CM is sick then you have to have a Plan B; some CMs have a 'backup' CM that can take the child at short notice with the family's consent, some parents keep leave back, some parents have family who can step in; if the child is sick the CM to charge even though the child is not attending that day

wrt holidays - each CM is different; some may charge you for their holiday, some may charge if you go on holiday and the CM remains open, some will not charge for your holiday

This is because CMs are self employed and can set their own terms and conditions

Thanks BoysAreLikeDogs. I need to look into it all properly.

As BALD says, all childminders have different terms and conditions so ask around - I give parents details of my annual leave in August for the next 12 months so they have plenty of notice and I find that most parents coincide their annual leave with mine. You do need to have a back up plan if your childminder is sick or unexpectedly unable to work but we are a very hardy breed and I have only had 3 unscheduled days off in the last 10 years - 2 funerals and 1 sick day! Would the family member who currently has your dd not be able to be your back-up if necessary? I don't charge for my holidays or sick days but many childminders do now days.

Thanks Coral. I will ask around to find out what ther terms and conditions are. I will try and keep a couple of lieu days aside for unexpected sickness etc because my family will be unable to continue to help due to a new job.

i can only go by what I do.

If I take holidays I charge half fee. If you tak hols I charge Half fee. You do not have to take hols at the same time, its just easier if we take at same time.

If I am sick no charge. If child or parent sick and child does not come half fee.

Please note that some childminders charge full fee for hols etc. Always check before you sign with a childminder.

Trust this helps.
