CM Club: How long is your standard 'day'

leeloo1 · 23/06/2010 12:17

I've previously had kids from:

7-4
7-4.30
8-6(more like 5.30 in practise)
10-5.30

and charged them my usual/standard 'day rate'.

But I've just had a mum who wants to sign contracts, the 1st time we met she said it'd probably be 8-6, but might be shorter days, now she's saying she wants 7.30-6.30.

So, just wondering how long everyone else's day is...

I start at 7.15 term time, 7.45 holidays to about 6, sometimes 6.15. Different families who have different needs.

KatyMac · 23/06/2010 12:38

7:30 til 6

Might do 7 by arrangement occasionally

atworknotworking · 23/06/2010 12:53

Cor blimey I dread to think I've done a few different combinations.

5.30 - 6pm
7 - 9pm
currently do 7-6.30 but I do earlier / later if needed. My caffine consumption has hit an all time high since minding.

Millenium · 23/06/2010 13:06

Generally my day starts at 8.00am. I have just had a new baby start whose Mum works from 9 to 5.30 so the minding hours will be 8.30 to 6.00.

I have never been asked to work later than 6.00 but it all depends of course on what the parents' needs are.

dmo · 23/06/2010 13:17

i work 7.30 till 6.45 each day but i charge per hr always have never done the day rate

leeloo1 · 23/06/2010 14:09

Ok... so 11 hour day not that unreasonable after all?! they should give out matchsticks to hold our eyes open with this job!!!

I really don't want to work past 6 as DS still v small and it'll interrupt his tea time and give him no chill out time on his own with me before bed. Needs must though I guess...

Still, soooo glad I turned down the email enquiry which said (words to the equivalent of)

'Hi X, Saw ur advert, need someone to mind Y 2 evenings each week, pick up at Z school at 3pm and keep her til 10pm, and Saturday 10-6pm! Will drop her round for trial on Saturday.'

Those really are hours I don't want to be working!!!
Thanks for the replies.

8am to 6pm standard, often have a lad from 8am to 10pm/midnight.

FeelingOld · 23/06/2010 16:48

Usually i work 7.45am til 5.15pm monday to friday.

Used to be 7.10 til 5.30 but mindee recently left and was replaced by a later starter thank goodness.

nannynick · 23/06/2010 17:55

leeloo1 - that also begs another question... What are typical working days? Many childminders probably don't childmind at weekends. Some might on occasion but I doubt weekend daytime care is Standard.

ayla99 · 23/06/2010 18:22

My daily rate is for 8 am - 5:30 pm but I currently work 7am-5:30. I prefer to start earlier than work later!

MUM2BLESS · 23/06/2010 21:14

Hi my hours are very varied.

Earliest start 08.00

Latest finish 18.00

Mind five children. Some only come before and after school.

I have done 07.00 hours (too early) done after 18.00 (too late)

Advice only do the hours you are comfortable with.

Times will change for some of the children a few months.

LoveMyGirls · 23/06/2010 21:19

I used to do 7.30am - 6.30pm now I do 8.00/ 8.30am to 6.15pm ish and dream of doing 8am - 4pm.

My daily rate is 8 til 6. I charge more before or after those hours.

HSMM · 23/06/2010 21:34

8-6 standard day. Double time for early or late. Different rates for overnight or weekends.

shoshe · 23/06/2010 21:56

I started at 6.10 yesterday morning, and will finish at 12.30 lunchtime Friday with one mindee that is a long day

But she will then be off till next wednesday when she will sleepover till friday morning again.

She often at this time of year stays over a couple of days then is not in for a few days, parents jobs take them away overnight in the summer, winter months (apart from run up to christmas when overnights are needed again for couple of weeks) she will come in at 10am and go by 2pm, maybe only 3 days a week.

Mum pays me 8-6 5 days a week every week of the year, i dont charge for the overnight, mum banks the hours she pays for that she dosnt use.

It works for us, although I would usually charge for overnight, this mindee has so much time off, it was better this way.

leeloo1 · 23/06/2010 21:58

Thanks again for the advice - I agree with you MUM2BLES - after the 2 days pw I currently start at 7am I'm worn out for the rest of the week - and thats with the LO going home at 4.30 - if she was staying for an extra 2 hours... eurgh!

LoveMyGirls and HSMM My DH says I should charge extra for the extra hours, but I don't think these parents could afford it... (I'm already at the top end of the fees round here).

My gut feeling is that its too long a day... will have to talk to the mum and see what (if anything) she can do. My hope is that the late finish is a 'worst case scenario' but it might not be...

Cross posted with you Shoshe- that is one weird schedule! Little one must be pretty much like one of your family staying over for days like that! how old is she?

Booh · 24/06/2010 09:20

At the moment for one child 4 days a week I do 7am to 7pm....and anything inbetween for the others!

shoshe · 24/06/2010 09:28

She is 2.5, and has been doing it since 8 months, so totally used to it.

Not the first I have had like it, but they are military children, with Mums and Dads serving, so usual in my neck of the woods.

ChildrenAtHeart · 24/06/2010 23:46

I am 'open' 8am - 6pm but am flexible & will work outside these times if required BUT I charge a premium rate for anything before my am school run and after 4.30pm, and super premium before 8am and after 6pm
