Can a childminder childmind at one's own house, or does that make her into a nanny? Very confused! Many thanks!

Someone working from your house is a nanny, employed by you.

A childminder works from their own home and is self employed.

thank you.

Just to confuse things... under childcare legislation a Childminder could Register your home as their place of work... and thus childmind from your home.

That is complicating matters though. So I'd suggest you look at the Employment situation... would you be employing the person to care for your child... or would you be using a service? When a childminder cares for multiple children from multiple families at the childminder's own home... they are providing a service.
When you have someone care for only your child/children at Your home... they are far more likely to be your Employee.

Well, just looked it up on the Ofsted website and it looks changed from how I remember it in 2003/04.

Ofsted: How We Inspect - Childminders towards the top of the page it says:
"Domestic premises mean any premises which are wholly or mainly used as a private dwelling, that is they are someone?s home. It does not have to be the childminder?s home but cannot normally be the home of any of the children for whom the childminder is providing care."

I suspect the change is due to the new categories introduced since 2003, such as Home Childcarers.

So I don't think it is of any help to you now... as you are wanting them to provide care for Your child, who would live at the registered address.

Sorry, it's going to be a non-starter in your case.

Darn; thanks for looking though!

I spoke to Ofsted about this because my cm wanted to become a nanny and just look after my and her children.

The arrangement is that she is registered as a home childcarer, employed by me and I pay her tax and NI etc. I also have all the insurances - employer's liability etc.

She looks after the children at my house for a large chunk of the day but will look after them at her house before school. Ofsted were happy with this and have registered her.
