CM Club:Reorganising my playroom; need help?

OK Currently I have 3 areas

Sleep room/Out of school room - 2.8m x 4.5m

Office small toilet - 3.3m x 1.2m (office) toilet (1.2 x .9)

Playroom - 3.6m x 7.5m

But the sleep room is used for storage/dumping & the OOS children hardly ever use it so it feels a bit 'wasted space'

They are in a line
Sleep room (toilet & office) Playroom

So I thought to take down the 'breakfast bar between the playroom & office & the wall between the office & the sleep room and have an area

2.8 x 4.5 reducing to 1.4 x 4.2 (with the loo bit at the end so it's only actually 3.3 x 1.2) reducing to 7.5 x 3.6

Then at the far end partition off the other end to make a room 2m x 3.6m just for sleeping and having the rest as one big room

What do you think?

Yes, keep the sleep area (dead space) as small as possible, so you have max play area. Sounds good to me.

Katymac · 16/06/2010 22:27

I wish I could afford the double decker cots, I could make it smaller again

Yep I got rid of my big kid room, as it became dead space, they much prefer to hang out with the toddlers or in the lounge , havn't missed it at all and the big kids have only just noticed (did it over xmas hols). Is it a lot of structural work or just stoothing kind of wall?

Katymac · 16/06/2010 22:32

'stoothing'??

I need to build a wall - probably out of cupboards

& demolish a stud wall

& build a desk

Oh NO Katy, don't get those horrible double-decker cots! They always remind me of farming rabbits in hutches or worse!

I'd definately have a relaxing, chillout area - maybe put a library of books and some beanbags in there?

atworknotworking · 16/06/2010 22:42

Would be great for storage, it doesn't sound like a weekend kind of a job though, will it effect you much day to day whilst its happening, or could you turn into one of those forest nursery things and put some tents and a portaloo up outside.

Katymac · 16/06/2010 22:44

Where are the books/relaxing area?
either
I'm not sure I like the cots - but I need 6 cots

Katymac · 16/06/2010 22:45

Try again

Where are the books/relaxing area?

I'm not sure I like the cots either - but I need 6 cots

I will do it over several weekends only doing whole jobs at a time

So make the new sleep room

Then make my desk

Then take down the wall & reduce the breakfast bar

Oh sorry! I'd probably be change the OOS/sleep area into a sleeping/relaxing area, then maybe the space wouldn't feel so under-utilised. I presume you're using travel cots that are collapsed after naps.

I've recently created a relaxing area with cuddly cushions, books to read and music to listen to. It's really popular with the after school children who just want to chill.

Katymac · 16/06/2010 23:15

The problem is that the babies sleep after when the children come home from school

Plus there is a problem in the holidays

Plus I can't monitor both rooms easily

It isn't working as a multi use room

I have floor plans

existing

proposed

I hope

Oh, I see! I thought you meant that the kids just weren't using it.

Why not get them to help with the designing, by the way? That's what I've done with the rest area and my garden. After all, they're going to use it .
For the rest area, we just discussed ideas of what we wanted, but I drew the basic shape of the garden on a sheet of A3 card for them and got them to colour in/stick pictures of play equipment and flowers onto the design. I picked up a lot of ideas just from listening to them discussing what should go on the plan.

I have mainly 2 and unders so there input is quite limited

i like it couldnt you use a some sort of fold away doors to separate ther areas and when not in use push them back so it opens the space and i like the 2 tea cot think there fab .wouldnt the fold away bed chaires be any good our nursey has these and has two cots for tiny babys .i have them 2 and a travel cot .wish i had your space t work with

Katymac · 17/06/2010 21:51

Which bit would you partitian off with doors?

It soon fills up with 9 or 12 children,, it's only just big enough

Bump for opinions/advise

OP posts:
missymoo2411 · 18/06/2010 18:47

you caould have the open plan still but zone your areas and have the doors any wear depends on how big you need the split as they would concertena away to the walls on a runner that is flush in the floor u have certain points that they lock at so you can have them half way open or fully we had them in our local center to separate the room if there were 2 functions on ,its only an idea if you still require 2 rooms but want the large space aswell

Katymac · 18/06/2010 20:24

Pretty much the whole of the south wall is windows so I'm not sure folding doors would work

I can zone it with furniture if I need to - I guess

I hadn't thought to separate it out - I was thinking about making it all bigger really

I'm just not sure if it's worth doing at all

I saw these today and thought of you Katy, very space saving

Horshamchildminder · 04/07/2010 00:23

Sorry if this is being stupid, but can't you just use travel cots in your bedrooms? Then you would have much more of a play area? I am very tired so sorry if I am being thick here.

KatyMac · 04/07/2010 08:32

They would be very far away from the play room

We only have 2 bedrooms - you couldn't fit a cot into DD's and you couldn't fit 6 into mine/DH's - plus DH would have no-where to go when he wasn't working

The bunk cots are great but very very expensive
