Is this reasonable?

Hi,
we are in the process of looking for a nanny and would really appreciate some advice please!

We live in the north of england in the sticks (very rural) and for 3 days from 8:30 til 5:30pm I was thinking £250 per week gross? (live out)..Is that reasonable? (I think that would be about 20k per year pro rata) The children are 1 and 2 and a half.

Preschooler would be going to preschool 2 afternoons out of those 3 days and then she would have to pick up the other 2 kids from school (we are ok taking them).

As an added bonus I was thinking we could give her more holidays as we are often away visiting family abroad and certainly more than the standard 20 working days a year as we get 32 days holidays with our work...so maybe we could offer her 30 days holidays to be taken when we are away or is that unreasonable?

would appreciate honest opinions.

PS experience wise I would want someone with around 5 years experience...

Thanks!

I think it's very reasonable, which area of the North is it? (I'm in Tyne and Wear looking for a job lol)

emy72 · 12/06/2010 17:05

Ha ha it's North Yorkshire.....

Ahh bit too south then lol!

If you're looking for an agency, I highly rate Tinies NorthEast (I'm sure she covers North Yorkshire), she's really good with both parents and nannies

NannyBeth · 13/06/2010 11:34

Yorkshire now has its own branch of Tinies but they are fab!

I am in Yorks and looking for a job! Email me on [email protected] if you want to speak further!

Holiday allowance is actually 28 days (5.6 weeks which includes all Bank Holiday), you are entitled to dictate when your nanny takes all her holiday but it may not be particularly popular.

£250 gross (assuming it's her only job) is approx £210 net, or £70/day which is perfectly reasonable, even for someone with that experience in your area. Nanny jobs are quite hard to come by so you should have some excellent candidates - try looking on netmums and gumtree to get an idea of what to expect! You will also have employers NI to pay on top of that £250gross of around £1k pa.

28 days pro rata

frakkit · 13/06/2010 15:03

Pro rata indeed, which is something like 17 days when calculated and rounded up. The 28 days was instead if the standard 20 days (4 weeks) presumably plus Bank Hols, which removes the issue of Monday working and holiday calculation.

I work as a nanny in North Yorkshire, and I think that your salary is very reasonable. I would recommend First Class Nannies as a good agency in the area. I've been with them for years!

i make 250gross about £13.5k gross or just under £11nett - not £20k

frakkit · 13/06/2010 20:50

It's nearly £20k gross if you round it up from 3 days to 5 though, blondes

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/06/2010 22:14

Oic

Dur. It did say pro rota

< dumb blonde emotion >

I would say it could be considered unreasonable to expect her to take holidays of only 30 days without her having any say over when those days are. I cant think of many occupations which impose holidays - I suppose some doctors are on fixed rotas and pilots and police I know are given their holiday weeks and have to plan around that.
HOwever if you state clearly your terms and print them out etc she can decide whether to accept. I do think that some people treat their nannies etc quite badly and particularly au-pairs - I have seen it myself and they are treated like slaves.
