Basicly I am currently an Afterschool nanny for two children. With the summer holidays coming up I don't know how to approach the subject of how many hours a week I will be working. Also I was wondering what is the normal thing that happens when the family goes away for a week...therefore I am unable to work. Do I get paid for my regular hours? Or do I lose out? Or something else? I'm very confused!?!?! Thanks!!

Nannynick or some one with more nanny knowledge will be a long shortley so be able to answer your question more comprehensivley,
What does it say on your contract?

What is the situation with regard to a contract - do you have something in writing, via e-mail, or a verbal agreement?

How would you usually ask your employer about something? For example writing a note, sending an e-mail, talking with the parent at the end of the day. You may find that it's best to do a bit of two things... quick chat plus a note which sets out for example when you are available over the summer and when you are away.

I don't have a written contract. I believe I have an email somewhere but not 100% sure! Agh now I wish I had a contract!

Try to locate any email correspondence, it may mention things like holidays and holiday pay.

Could be a good time to discuss with them about all the arrangements. Your employer should have given you a written statement within the first 2 months. However as you have not got that, your points of reference would be any communication you have between you and your employer.

I found the email and it doesn't mention anything about holiday or holiday pay.

Are you getting payslips?

Sounds as though things may be fairly informal. I think you need to decide how you want to play things, rock the boat too much and you won't have the work.

Sounds like a very informal arrangement you should have a contract and have already been employed for so many hrs whether its "x" amount during term time and "x" amount in school holidays and how you are paid agreed whether for hrs as worked or divided equally over 12 monthly payments.

Every employee is entitled to the equivalent of 5wks paid annual leave so they should pay you.

They should be paying your tax and Ni also.

Think you need to sit down with parents and set out a contract so you both know where you stand.

If you have no contract then you need to get one.

You need to ask them what they want you to work through the holidays and you should get paid while they are away but I expect you won't.
