download and read

If you can bear to, of course

What can I write down to show awareness of sustainability in my setting?

We get stuff from the scrapstore, we recyle cardboard and take plastics to the recyling skip at the supermarket

I take my fruit and veg peelings to my Mum's for her compost bin

Anything else I should be doing?

I don't have a water butt or my own compost bin

Have you still not had your spection yet?

No I couldn't bear to read all of it I am officially not reading anymore ofsted bumf for at least a week as I am now officially Outstanding .

But you could think about buying stuff from charity shops, making puppets from old smelly socks. The recycle thing is great my spector liked that we do that, using plastic carrier bags in crafts like weaving making clippy mat things, helping mindees understand the impact of waste on society like landfill, why some things have to be disposed of specially like batteries / fridges. Having solar garden lights is good too, most people have these now and they are pretty cheap to buy, you could put a big bucket out to catch rainwater to water the flowers the mindees plant.

Also if you buy from local producers it shows how you are helping to sustain business in your own community.

I pointed out to Inspector Ofsted that I am growing my own herbs and veg, which all counts towards sustainable living too.

Being energy efficient is another good one, point out if you have those longlasting bulbs, turn lights out when not in use etc.

Walking on the school run/using public transport where possible so not using a car for short trips?

Seasonality for food - so eating British soft fruits and veg in the summer, not air mileish ones from South Africa in the winter?

Less plasticy toys and games bought from new, more wooden/paper/generally recyled or repurposed ones?

Less paperwork - save the trees!

pippin26 · 04/06/2010 19:03

atwork..... you have gained OS???? congratualations chick - well bloody done.

Katymac · 04/06/2010 19:03

Do you need a policy - should it be part of your SEF?

Does your council do community composting?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 04/06/2010 19:21

I never mentioned it anywhere in my SEF (but submitted it in December, a paper version)

No community composting here more's the pity

Okay, have started knocking up policy:

''SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
Our planet is under increasing pressure from human activity which has led to many natural resources being depleted.
I am committed to reduce, reuse and recycle where possible:
Scrapstore ? I use the local scrapstore to obtain some resources.
Recycling ? I reuse items such as cardboard, kitchen roll tubes, yoghurt pots and newspapers for activities; I recycle items like foil, milk cartons and metal cans.
Low energy lightbulbs are fitted throughout the setting.
The radiators upstairs have been fitted with thermostatic valves.
I talk to the children, at an appropriate level about environmental issues.
I use local suppliers for milk and eggs, to help sustain local businesses, and buy fruit and vegetables when in season.
I have a lot of wooden toys, both bought new and secondhand.''

What have I missed?

And on my To Do list (which is already HUGE with things like source funding for all weather outdoor surface) I can put:

obtain water butt/compost bin

Got to pop out, back later

you all rock x x x

Remember your sef is a living document it should be constantly updated and changed

Numberfour · 04/06/2010 19:35

i can barely keep my attendance register up to date.....
good thing i am having a week off soon.

so so so tired at the moment.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 04/06/2010 20:58

I am keeping notes, annotating my paper copy of the SEF as and when I make changes/improvements, is that not right?

I intend to retype and resubmit in December, and each December forthwith.

I didn't do it online as I could not get the boxes to embiggen to get all my words in, so downloaded, word-processed and submitted by post

and aaaaargh because I have re read my SEF and there IS stuff in about recycling and whatnot

I must be going round the bend
