car insurance query re: nanny - help?!!

hello all you knowledgable people,

am really hoping someone can shed some light on my situation:
am about to start employing a nanny looking after my 21month old son - she is 21 years old, lives locally and half way through her Early Years Education degree - the post is to cover this summer full time up to DS starting nursery in Spetember (including a settling-in period/part time over September), then on-going throughout holiday periods as and when she's available/needed for possibly the next two years.

the problem is that she is insured on her Mum's policy (3rd party) ie.doesn't have her own insurance - i thought she might need business insurance (which we would cover) but am confused as to how to arrange this - would she in fact need her own fully comp policy? could we cancel/restart policy as we'd only need her p-t following the 3months of the summer f-t position...

i am so sorry - any help would be gratefully received - it's all adding stress to my guilt-ridden state at leaving my son for the firt time to return to work! (pathetic, i know!)

Her mother can probably add business cover for all users. Best thing to do is get her to call up the insurance company and ask. You're right she will need it but I don't know the best way to do it.

The other thing to consider is whether her using the car every day for work etc would be seen as her being the main driver...

thanks frakkit - good points well made!

what have other people done? are nannies all fully comp? so confusing!!

Most nannies have their own fully comp business insurance or use an employer's car, but insuring a young nanny may be prohibitively expensive!

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/05/2010 20:00

not sure if you can get business cover without being fully comp (my friend works in insurance and her company wont)

also if she is the main driver then she should be fully comp

swimngs and roundabout with young nannies - you can pay them less but car insurance much more exp

where an old fart like me is cheap to insure but costs lots to employ

gizzy1973 · 25/05/2010 20:11

I am also insured on my DP's car, which I drive to work as he works in the city. I have full business use to drive my charges around in it

vicki2010 · 26/05/2010 12:50

does anyone know if the insurance is much higher when using for business?? i need to change mine and have been putting off doing so as finances are tight!! bad i know!!

SuperDuperJezebel · 26/05/2010 14:35

Most policies dont charge much extra for business use, if any at all. DP's didnt.

xoxcherylxox · 26/05/2010 18:57
