Need advice about childminder

I have an excellent childminder and changed a few months ago to her after having problems with the previous one.
I've just been told that the only way she'll be able to carry on picking up dd from school is if a) she picks her up late every day by around 10 minutes (they are not let out until carer seen) and b) she travels in the front seat of the car in her booster seat.

Are these two things doable or is this over?

IMO it is over as I wouldn't do these things or allow someone else to do it.

memoo · 21/05/2010 18:21

Sorry but I would find a new childminder tbh

rainbowinthesky · 21/05/2010 18:21

No, I wouldnt either.

Why have things changed? Has she now taken on another child who has to be picked up from another school? Very unfair of her to prioritise a new child over an existing mindee, if so. I don't think it is fair to expect your daughter to wait 10 mins for her every day and I don't think her teacher will be very happy either when she realises this is a permanent thing. She will be unable to leave the classroom until someone collects your daughter. I also wouldn't be happy with her travelling in the front of her car (assuming this is not something you do yourself).

How old is your child?

The collecting from school is not a particuarly major issues - there are minders I know who have to scoot between to schools and the children are kept hold of in the office till the minder collects. Obviously this arrangement would have to be ok'd with the school.

However the travelling in the front seat is perhaps more of an issue.
Does the car have an airbag? Is it just a booster seat or is it highbacked - giving more impact protection.

Thats a shame when you have found a good minder but ultimately its your decision

HecateQueenOfWitches · 21/05/2010 18:28

picking her up 10 minutes late every day is not really very fair on the teacher, is it? Also not nice for her to have to wait, although not the "thy've forgotten me" feeling if she knows it will always be 10 minutes. But it is taking the piss and how do you think the teacher will feel about it?

front seat in booster - how old is she? Is it safe?

I dont know how pick up works in her school but when I was on maternity leave and picking up ds at his school the children usually came out between 5-10 minutes late. No idea how her school works.
No, I would never put her in our front seat.

I'm asking if the front seat is an issue. I've never done it with my kids but never had to iyswim.

The childminder has got more business and dd only goes after school and not during holidays so I can understand she can get a lot more money from the other children.

Her seat is a high backed booster seat type one with some side protection.

She suggested we see how it goes re the ten minutes and if the school complains we'll need to rethink.

Seems like she is changing things and calling the shots..

It needs to be OK for you, your child, the school and the CM. I have children in the front seat of my car, but the air bag is turned off.

xoxcherylxox · 22/05/2010 10:18

i tend to put the oldest child in the front seat if the rest of the car is full, but then i dont have an air bag to worry about. has she phoned the school to check with them 1st i had a child who i got out of school slightly early her school has 2 bells a bus bell then the normal bell so she got let on the bus bell but i had to phone and ask the school. my children then changed again and instead of her getting out early they use to keep her at the office. i now collect another child from there and although school finishes at 3 and im always there, hes never out till 3.05/3.10.

Ripeberry · 22/05/2010 11:50

As a CM and tied to my own children's school, so although I'm surrounded by 3 schools all within a mile of each other I can't pick up from the other schools.

lollipopmother · 22/05/2010 21:45

I put children in the front of my Fiesta too, I have had a switch put on the airbag so that I can turn it on and off, it's been really useful. I ask the parents first if they're ok for their child to go in the front but no one has ever had a problem with it so far (one baby that hates being in the back and 2 schoolies).

cinnamongreyhound · 22/05/2010 22:03

I also don't see the problem with the front seat, I don't drive a lot with my minded kids as I often have too many to fit in my car but when I do I always have to remember who was in the front last as that's where they all want to be! If it's just me and DS he goes in the front with me and he is 3, never considered it an issue.

I now do 2 school pick ups but I go to my original/longest customers school first and told the parents of the new children that they would have to arrange for the school to hold the children until I get there, about 15 mins when walking. They wait in the office though, not with their teacher as the secretary is there quite a while after school has finished.
