Term-time only nanny

My current job comes to an end this August as the youngest starts school full-time. I'm very lucky and have not had to look for another job as my mb's sister is due back at work in September and has asked me to nanny for her. I'm really pleased as I've got to know her and her children well over the last year (her oldest is in same nursery class as my charge)

She is a teacher and I know that paying my wage will take up most of her salary (she's mentioned that she is fine about this and sees going back to work as keeping on her career path and paying into her pension) I will be workin a 3 day (31.5hr) week - the same as I am working now. I have offered to work term-time only. I quite like the appeal of time off work every 7 weeks and could probably pick up some ad-hoc work in the holidays to make up for the loss of wages.

I'm off to hers on Tuesday to discuss and put together a contract with her. Is there anything I need to bear in mind and have/not have in the contract? This will be my first term-time only position.

What happens if you're sick, how are you going to accrue A/L are you going to paid the same each 12 months etc etc etc.

For example if you end up being sick in your unpaid leave you aren't going to be able to pick up any extra work that type of thing.

I would think carefully about having term time only. Personally I would be happier at having the standard x weeks paid leave plus an additonal 4 weeks unpaid leave. She may need you to work some of the holidays as she will have prep work to do etc.

Thanks, these are the sort of things I need to bear in mind and think through.

I think I will be paid for 45 weeks - 39 weeks school time, 1 week for any courses/inset days she may work and 5 weeks paid holiday, paid monthly over the 12 months. So that leaves 7 weeks a year unpaid. If I do ad-hoc work in that time I'm guessing it will be on a BR rate? Also, would I be employed or self employed for the ad-hoc work?

Probably self employed I should think.

It could be good to build up a number of families with school children that you baby sit for regularly and hope they give you holiday work as that's when you will be free?

Is nanny share an option?

No, I don't think nanny share is an option. I think working with 1 family and their 2 children is enough for me.

Not quite sure how much ad-hoc I'll pick up. I don't really do babysitting - I'm in my 40's, have older children and dh and I go out quite a lot. My current mb may need occasional care in the hols and she also has another sis that might want the odd day here and there, otherwise keeping an eye on mumsnet/netmums. Fortunately, we can manage fine financially if I don't pick up any work.

I am about to start a mentoring role for troubled children. It's 8-12 hours a month and the money roughly equates to 2½ weeks of my day job wages.

If you don't need the money then I think it sounds fab just get paid your salary split over 12 months and enjoy the extra time off

Definitely clarify how you want to be paid; our term-time only nanny likes to be paid on a monthly basis for what she will do that month so March was a 5 week month but May is 3. We pay her holiday pay on a monthly basis too because that's what works best for her. It meant working out how many days holiday she would be entitled to for every week worked and adding that to the weekly salary. Due to some working regulation (I asked on here but now can't remember what it's called) we added a separately signed clause to the contract stating that she was happy to receive holiday pay in this way.

If you're going to be employed term-time only do make sure you know which borough's terms will be used to determine your dates.

I have just been offered a term time only job starting in Sept( works perfect for me as I have 2 school age children of my own!)

I am going to be paid the same each month,worked out inc paid hols etc so there aren't any months where my wage is low

although my current 3 day family would like me to be their holiday Nanny ,so I think I will be doing 3 days in the hols ( when I am not away ) for them too
