Pay nanny more when have additional child?

I have a nanny who looks after my little boy. He is now 2 and she has looked after him since he was 10 months old for £10 per hour. I have now had another baby and plan to ask my nanny to look after him in time too. Will I have to pay her more or is it generally accepted that if they are siblings its all part of the original contract? I'm pretty sure in my nanny's contract is says 'child or any additional children' but its more about her expectations.

Generally it's accepted that your care for the children of the family - I doubt most nannies expect a payraise for another sibling.

Has she had a payrise since working for you?

RTJ · 30/04/2010 23:32

No she hasn't. Maybe I should.....

Also depends on the wording of the contract - if it only specifies care for your first child I think you'll need a new contract including both children.

RTJ · 30/04/2010 23:34

Pretty sure the contract covers it - just worried about her expectations as she won't like being referred to her contract

It might be worth reviewing her pay then if she's been with you over a year anyway.

RTJ · 30/04/2010 23:37

Ok. Thanks for the advice. Any idea what an acceptable rise would look like?

I increased my nanny's, for the simple reason that I had not raised it before and I thought she was great and wanted to keep her happy. I raised it by £25 net per week.

frakkinnuts · 01/05/2010 09:16

I would combine not having had a raise with the new charge.

If you'd given a yearly raise I would have said leave it as it is and in the event your contract doesn't specify subsequent children you don't need a completely new contract, just a signed amendment to update it.

frakkinnuts · 01/05/2010 09:19

As for an acceptable raise think in terms of a % and what you can afford. Maybe 5%? Not less than 3% IMO.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/05/2010 09:23

missus, most nannies i know and including myself do kinda expect a payrise, even if only a £10 a week, its additional duties and job is different from the one they orginally took on

compared to going for a job with 3 children at the start iyswim

but yes as your nanny hs been there over a year,i would give a small payrise

rtj - why do you think nanny wont like being referred to her contract? thats the whole point of a contract to protect and cover both employer/employee

nannynick · 01/05/2010 09:57

But Blondes when a child goes to school would you expect a pay drop?

I would not expect extra pay due to there being a new sibling.
I would expect the weekly activities kitty to be reviewed, as babies can incur admission costs at some childrens activities.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/05/2010 13:13

no as still on call, unless wanted me to not work 9-12 lol

maybe im lucky, i have never said i want a payrise, but with all the familys i have worked for who have 2/3/4th children while im there i have had a payrise - so guess kinda expect one as always had one iyswim

RTJ · 01/05/2010 18:15

Ok. Thanks all for your advice. Looks like I should be thinking about a rise anyway so prob makes sense to wrap the 2 things together

Yearly pay rises are expected.

Your contract is what counts, not expectations.

castleonthehill · 01/05/2010 18:40

Reviewing pay is a good Idea or explaining why you can't give her one. Increasing her pay just before your go on ML may make cash flow tricking. I would sit down and have a meeting about how long your going to be on ML what you expect to happen. If you are going to expect her to take the baby with her to groups and then bring it back for bfs of if your going to go to the groups with her. This will help your nanny know what's going on and how the job may change

APassionateWoman · 01/05/2010 18:44

Yearly pay rises are expected? Really? I don't get a yearly pay rise, so won't be able to pass that on to my nanny, unfortunately.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 01/05/2010 18:54

When I worked as a nanny I stayed several years with most families so yes, after the first years rise, I did expect them in a way.
