Ds2 goes to a private nursery all day, he also goes to state run school nursery for couple of hours in the afternoon, private nursery take him there (its next door) and pic him up

He has been there for 3.5 yrs and they only ever close for a week over christmas

Just got a note in ds's bag to say 'dont forget the school and nursery are closed for 2 weeks half term'

can they do this? i have already booked my annual leave so cant get the time off work now, wtf am i paying them £500 a month if they are going to close when the schools close

I dont know any private day nurseries that close for school holidays other than a few days at christmas.

Does the letter mean the school and school nursery rather than them maybe and its just badly worded?

VinegarTits · 27/04/2010 18:53

I am hopping it is just a spelling mistake

it isnt even a letter, just a note tagged onto a note about them having a Spanish themed day this Friday

but why would they need to inform me about the school closing the school informs me about these things anyway

DDs preschool was private and term time only. Nurseries - which I would also call preschools - attached to schools are also term time only in my experience.

The DDs private nursery, meaning a place providing all day childcare, was open year round. DD2 is going to a state run preschool/nursery which is for over 2s only that we will pay more like private nursery fees for but that doesn't close during term times.

I think it's a question of terminology varying from institution to institution and you just have to check the opening hours and schedules when you sign up?

VinegarTits · 27/04/2010 20:37

Harriet, it is a private nursery that is open all year round, its not a pre school its not attached to a school (just happens there is a school next door)

like i said in my OP he has been there 3 and a half years, they have never closed for 2 weeks before, its says in the contract that they are open 7.30 till 5.30 weekdays, they close for one week at christmas and thats all

Presumably the state run school is where he goes for his funded sessions? If so, these do normally only run during term times. So, they may be trying to bring it to your attention that he won't be going next door for a couple of hours each afternoon. You referred to it as a state run school nursery, so I'm guessing they mean that rather than the private nursery. Could that make sense?

My son's private nursery does completely shut for a week in August, as well as over Christmas. But, this is not the norm I don't think.

Snooks14 · 27/04/2010 20:48

I agree with Soapsy - I think it would be extremely unusual for a private nursery to close over half term. My DS also attends a private nursery which also provides before and after school care now that he is in P1.
The nursery do also remind us of school holidays and that is to remind us that if we want aftercare to look after them during holidays then we need to book that separately.

My daughter's nursery is only closed on bank holidays (and doesn't charge for them either).

pinksancerre · 27/04/2010 20:52

Are you sure its not a note from the state run nursery? [hopeful emoticon]

atworknotworking · 28/04/2010 06:46

Is it a one off closure for this year? Maybee they are having some work done on the building and need to close. IME private nurseries usually close bank holidays and christmas week only, I find it a bit odd TBH, unless its due to building work in which case I could understand as finding tradespeople to work bank hols and xmas week is a nightmare.

VinegarTits · 28/04/2010 08:49

slight update

I dropped ds2 off this morning and went up to the nursery manager with the letter and said 'please tell me this is a typo and your not closing for 2 weeks?'

and she said 'oh that letter is not from me, its from the school'

so yep i am an idiot, feel free to stone me

she did have a good laugh at me though when i said i'd been worried all night
