you don't need qualifications
you do need enthusiasm
helps if you can cook
you need to not mind mucking in with anything that's needing to be done... from laundry, general cleaning to entertaining children.

To add to what nick said:

You don't need qualifications but they help and you can use your job as a placement to train.
People might expect a 1st Aid cert, a CRB and a bit of relevant experience.
A driving license is a massive plus.
Check sites like nannyjob, netmums and gumtree for people wanting an extra pair of hands!

I used to have a mothers help and I just wanted her to be a second me, I didn't ask for any qualifications other than being able to drive and was lucky to find someone through a ad in the local paper.
When I was working being reliable was almost the most important quality to me and a general attitude of being able to get on with what was needed without being asked, making sure the dishes were all done when I got home from work etc.
I think it would be a really satisfying job - getting to know a second family and being really appreciated for what you do.

It helps if you are a Mum yourself, or have some childcare experience

I don't have many quals but my experience ( 15 years) and the fact I have 2 children of my own always wins hands down!

You have to be happy, approachable and able to do things off your own back

If I see something needs doing,I do it.

and you have to like children, sometimes dogs ( or other pets!) and housework lol !

I was a mothers help and I found that the majority of jobs advertised were for out of school hours. I don't know how that would work if you have children of your own.

RachieB · 28/04/2010 09:00

My Mothers Help roles were during the day,so was able to pick my son up from school

or he used to go to the after school club sometimes, if I was needed to work until say 5pm

I have never done a MH position looking after older ones,it's always been for a new baby or new baby plus older baby / toddler

I do sometimes see advertised, parents looking for evening mothers help type roles,to help with tea / bath / homework / bedtime routine
5/6pm - 8 /9pm etc
This would be ok if you had a partner ( or someone else, relative etc ?) home at that time to look after your children!

Someone I know does this 4 times a week ,and then doesn't have any childcare outgoings,as the dad looks after the son whilst she is at work
