Do you mean actual school or nursery attached to a school?

Dd1 was born April 07 and starts nursery in September (that's when she starts being eligible for her free sessions)

AFAIK the latest a child can start proper f/time school is the term after their 5th b/day.

However all my reception mindees this year have started the term before their 5th, so have been 41/2 ish.

Try putting a post on education, lots of teachers on their who will def know.

Pre-schoolers are 3yo, some are their for a full year then go onto reception, some do 6mths then go up to reception.

My DD went in at 3 to the nursery class in her pre-prep (Nursery is the year below reception at this school). She was ready for it, but my DS would not have been ready at that age and he went in nearly a year older. It all depends on your child really. DD has loved it and is thriving, a more reserved child might be less happy - especially when they are confronted with school uniform, older children in the playground, etc, etc. If they don't start until Reception then I don't think they 'lose anything' in terms of learning/friendship - at our school the class size grows by around a 3rd as it moves from nursery up to reception, and another couple of children always join at yr 1.

Content of the day at this age is all directed play (and non-directed play of course)

I would also advise that you pick your school well - nurturing environment much more important than anything else at this stage.
