First a phone call enquiry, things going well and was about to offer them a slot to come over this week when they asked me if I believe in God, when I said no I'm not religious, they put the phone down on me

Then another call from a family who's 2 children I mind, asking me to be Godparent to their youngest boy Not entirely sure where to go with that one though given my comment above!

Well, obviously you have to tell the child's parents that you don't believe and give them the chance to chose someone else.

AvadaKedavra · 05/04/2010 20:01

Yes I realise that, just hoping they don't have the same reaction as the potentials

Not being religious, and not believeing in God are two different things though.

southeastastra · 05/04/2010 20:03

it's a sign

AvadaKedavra · 05/04/2010 20:15

Am I about to be struck down then?

Lynette, I'm not religious and not a believer in any higher being

Ava, i would probably have given the same answer being put on the spot like that!!! besides, it isn't really any of their business, is it?

WEIRD!!!!!

probonbon · 06/04/2010 07:07

When you're a Godparent you have to say "I turn to Christ" so you orta share your non belief..they need to know.

AvadaKedavra · 06/04/2010 08:52

They'll be here later so will get it over and done with, I do hope they don't take offence though, I did feel very honoured to have been asked

dont you have to be christened yoruself, before you are able to be a godparent?

AvadaKedavra · 06/04/2010 13:13

Wouldn't know. I was christened anyway not that that is the point, I don't believe in God.

They were fine with it by the way

I know that to be a Godparent to a Catholic child then you have to have done all the Catholic gubbins but they don't mind having people who aren't Catholic as 'witnesses'. I don't know about C of E protocol though.

BoffinMum · 09/04/2010 20:49

I think the C of E position is that you should have been baptised, and be prepared to say the I turn to Christ thing.

However declaring baptism is just a case of the parents ticking a box on the form when they put your name down. You don't have to present a certificate or anything like that.

At the end of the day, and considerably more important IMVHO, is how you behave once you are a godparent.

Shoshe · 09/04/2010 22:05

I got asked by a mindees Mum once as well,

Had to explain when she said

' You are CofE arnt you tho'

That actually I was an Athiest, and by birt Jewish and Thank You for asking me, but maybe she ought to ask somebody else.
