Activities to do with round things....?

I have a little boy that comes here and he seems to be really into round shaped objects. It started off with the moon, but I've noticed it's also balls (or any shape) round shaped food like grapes etc.

Can you think of any hands on activities connected to this sort of interest?

I was thinking of making loads of papermachie moons and hanging them from the ceiling? Or maybe even the solar system (bit advanced for 2.5 yrs but still fun!) What about some sort of water activity?

I'm going to make a treasure basket of balls too. Found some amazing disco gliding balls today.

Paper plate faces
Muffin pizzas
Throwing balls into buckets
Make a ramp to roll round things down
Spinning tops
Hula hoops/quoits

Like the hanging moons and planets idea

Lay out a large roll of paper, (wall paper works well) put out trays of paint, roll the balls into the paint, then roll them across the paper.

In a tray has sides or handles put some paint in and paper, add marbles (adult supervision needed) rock the tray back and forth, makes marble prints on paper, Although an do it without the paper.

will think of some more

For a water activity just different ball shapes and see which float and which sink would fun (those craft polystyrene balls, bouncy ball, etc).

My DS likes tinfoil balls.

closely supervised marble run?

making balls/peas out of playdough

make fruit salad with grapes, blueberries etc

roll balls down a tube

what about circles - does he like things that go round too - such as stirring gloop, watching washing machine?

Could play roll-a-ball, will type out lyrics in a minute, if only you two sit oppposite each other if more children sit in a circle,

The sing:
Roll a ball, Roll a ball, Roll a ball to Ben
Ben has got the ball, now roll it back to me.

You can repeat this several times, or if in a group sing: Roll a ball, roll a ball, roll aa ball to Ben, ben has got the ball now roll it to a friend ( he then choose who to roll it to)

This song can progress, changing it to bounce instead of roll, or throw e.t.c

What about pasta 'wheels' for lunch.

Bubble painting.

Blowing bubbles.

biscuit/fairy cake making.

solar system sounds fab, this looks good.

Printing.

using cotton wool balls in pictures.

using various bottle tops (pop, milk) and food lids (metal and plastic like cream) to junk model?

cotton reels - great for using as a way of printing circles. Also for playing with, though not round exactly... they are a cylinder.

navyeyelasH · 03/04/2010 17:57

ohh some brill ideas here, we have already done some of them, made pasta wheels and also catherine wheels from purr pastry. Also tried roll a ball, but he doesn't seem to really like that as much. Maybe because then it's more like a sharing thing?

Cotton Reels - how could I forget thanks NannyNick will def be doing that, have tried marbles in paint but he didn't like getting them dirty!

Balls down a tube/ramp will also be a winner and would be better than marble run (we have destruction baby who would need straight jacket if we did marble run!)

Fruit salad with berries - amazing!

Brilliant thanks so much everyone, going to write these all down. We could write an amazing play book between us all ya know!

Taking a ball to roll down the slide at the park is always fun - the ball obsessed little one I have also likes rolling them down hills and chasing after them and then trying to throw them back up from the bottom and catch them as they come back down. He also likes walking around with juggling hoops over his head and quoits on his wrists - oh and making a big pile of hula hoops and sitting in the middle of a it!

How about skittles?

Another favourite activity is a huge box of different sized pompoms - find some circular bits and pieces for him to sort them into eg bottles, baskets, muffin trays, bowls etc.

oooh just thought of another few, do you have the paint dabbers, tubes of paint with sponge head, these make circles as you dab them on the paper, although the do make paint splatters if you use a bit of force. (which i am sure you are aware children will)

do you have any tunnels, these are circular, the kiddies i work with love climbing inside aand then standing up and pulling them down so they are wearing the tunnel
