Can one of you please explain the implications for me?

I am not sure if the ofsted is just for the eyfs stuff or if it means she is not a registered childminder.
She gave me a contract on NCMA standard paper if you see what I mean.

DD is 9 so eyfs not applicable but I am concerned that if she is not registered then obviously she is not insured and not legally allowed to operate as a childminder.
I don't receive tax credits so no benefit implications.

Inspections are usually done every 3 years ish. Ask for her Ofsted registration number, if she is registered then she should have one.

However, as your child is 9 she doesn't actually have to be a registered cm to look after her as you only have to be registered to take children under the age of 8.

Wanderingsheep · 03/04/2010 09:26

She also should have her registration and insurance certs displayed in her setting.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/04/2010 09:28

also CMs are inspected roughly every 3 years

itsmeitsmeolord · 03/04/2010 09:29

OK thanks, she has children under 8. Both are under 3 in fact.

Sounds like someone gossip-mongering though.

She probably is a member of the NCMA and has insurance with them if she gave you a standard NCMA contract (many cms use them) and you need to be Ofsted registered to be a member.

nannynick · 03/04/2010 09:42

You can look up the reg number on the Ofsted website. It will show you the current conditions of registration. The reg number is on her certificate that you will see at her home.

Not unusual at all for there to be 2+ years between inspections. Ofsted try to do them every 3 years but do get behind on that sometimes.

Katymac · 03/04/2010 16:06

They told me I might not be inspected again for up to 5 years

I was very shocked

aSilverlining · 03/04/2010 16:10

Not being inspected in the last 2 years doesn't mean she is not registered. As a rule of thumb the better your inspection result the longer it will be to your next inspection.

She should be able to give you her reg number. Does she have references from current families she minds for?

dobby2001 · 03/04/2010 17:34

tis only registration certificate that has to be on display, insurance certificate has to be made available to inspect if requested. Most cms have a portfolio or specific folder containg this along with first aid certificate etc. If she uses NCMA or Morton Miche contracts the policy number of the insurance will be written down when you filled in the contract so you can check this.

OFSTED are horrendously behind on inspections in some areas so this is not the CMs fault. As others have said average is 3yrs between inspections but folks I know who have been inspected recently have been told it may change to be longer It is also being outsourced to private agencies in the south east and northern england.

ponymad · 03/04/2010 21:59

Was told similar Katymac, inspector said next inspection would be 4 years and 9 months !!

But who could ever believe what Ofsted have to say

Katymac · 03/04/2010 22:05

TBH I think it is criminal

I may be in the minority but I really think Childminders should be inspected every year

Networks did in part fill that need but my network has been disbanded & I only get a visit on request which is not good enough imo

Scarfmaker · 04/04/2010 00:09

In my area (South-East London) it seems Ofsted is behind on inspections for nurseries and childminders.

Scarfmaker · 04/04/2010 00:10

Sorry I meant some haven't been done for over the normal 3 years.
