What country?
In England, to care for an unrelated child at your home for in excess of 2 hours in a day (on more than 14 occasions a year) you need to register as a Childminder with Ofsted. This is usually done via your local council or county council Early Years department / Families Information Service.
In Scotland it's the Care Commission that you need to register with. If in Wales it's CSSIW.

Do you own the maisonette or rent?
If renting, you will often need permission from your landlord.

How old are your own children? If they are under 5, then depending on the size of your home you may find that you won't be allowed to care for another under 5. It's all about space available.

Worth having a read of EYFS Statutory Framework (May 2008) and the EYFS Guidance documents. As a childminder you will need to be doing EYFS with minded children.
