Idea's to fill a water tray with?

We are about to move into a ground floor flat, with no outdoor space.

The flat is huge, and the playroom has room to put the water table up this one

We have laminated floors so don't want to put sand as it scratches the floor, have thought of lentils one side, and rice the other, but they are quite alike in texture, any other ideas?

goop...cornflour and water. Is fab. Roch hard to touch but when u spoon it up it turns to liquid.

pasta shapes, like bows, tubes, wheels.

emmcar · 14/03/2010 12:00

Shaving foam, gloop (cornflower + water with a little paint)

emmcar · 14/03/2010 12:04

oops, cross post.
Compost and mini plant pots, plastic trowels + rakes etc

Shoshe · 14/03/2010 12:07

Dont really want to put gloop into it, as it gets everywhere and takes forever to wash away, like the idea of compost, but think I want to be able to leave it up, so they can use it anytime (like we did with the sand pit in garden, I miss my garden already!!!!)

Think I may try different pasta.

Shredded paper and a little bit of water.
Sand with a little washing up liquid(or perhaps baby bath for sensitive skins)-makes mouldable sand
Spaghetti cooked in coloured water -or coloured pasta shapes will work too but this is much more expensive.
Jelly

Striker, I have been known to put babies in babybaths of jelly

One Mum was astounded when she walked in to find her DS all jellified.

Oooh lots of good ideas here. We are currently having something different in the play tray each week (so each mindee gets to play with it). Last week we had a construction box with gravel and all the diggers/dumper trucks.

This week will be water with the marble run in it and food colouring etc.

Next week we are having porridge oats in the bottom with stables and all the little horses.

So many ideas and not enough weeks!!!

balijay · 14/03/2010 18:54

Just remembered... ocean box is another idea I came across on the internet... coloured aquarium gravel in the bottom with lots of little sealife mixed in...

I also live in a ground floor flat so need to be really creative inside.

At nursery one of DS's favourites is cut up pom poms (cheer leader type) and little fuzzy pompoms (the cutting and sticking type. They have all different colours. Looks fab.

I have a feeling that our cm uses flour in hers during the winter as its not gritty like sand and is easier to clean up

hennipenni · 15/03/2010 13:52

If you use flour please be aware that it is very slippy when dropped on a laminate floor.

Bumnoise · 15/03/2010 17:46

flour will get everywhere and cover your whole flat with a film of it. also not good to be breathed in!
