Really stupid question, but... How exactly does every child matters fit with EYFS?

I have the day off unexpectedly so I'm doing some paperwork until the sun gets a bit warmer then I'm cleaning my garden!

I'm filling in my SEF, I'm on the outcomes section. I'm drawing a blank, it feels like "every child matters" is a throw away term they just tagged on at the end to confuse people.

All I understand is that Every Child Matters and the 5 outcomes are what we hope to achieve by implementing EYFS. But how do they link together?

Is it like this:

Enjoy and Achieve: learning and development
Feel safe: Welfare requirements
Healthy Lifestlyle: umm no idea
Positive Contribution : again not a clue
Future skills: ermmmm

I would really love to meet who ever wrote this framework, it must have been lots of different people because it's so jargonistic and terms for things that mean the same change suddenly ARGH! It's just not how my brain works

ECM and EYFS were written by completely different people.

ECM is a load of broad, overarching themes that carry on through to the age of 18 so if we take a 3 year old who is FT at your setting, rising 4 and going FT in Reception next year we can go:

Enjoy and Achieve: learning and development
YES for acheivement, for enjoyment obviously stress that activities are fun and you provide positive feedback

Feel safe: Welfare requirements
SORT OF - emotional welfare and safe environment

Healthy Lifestlyle: umm no idea
HELP - health eating, being active, encouraging good hygeine, some physical welfare

Positive Contribution : again not a clue
HELP - being involved in the setting and the community (difficult for a 3yo!) in a positive way (this is where you talk about teaching good behaviour and modelling being a helpful citizen) HERE might help.

Future skills: ermmmm
HELP (this is what you're working towards) - encourage independence for going to school, supporting literacy and numeracy to provide the foundation for a good education leading to future 'economic wellbeing'

Now you need to condense that to fit all the children in your setting.

HTH a bit.

Also try looking on nursery nurse fora - they have to implement ECM.

Brill thanks frakkin that does help a lot. I've also just noticed that on the bottom of the principle into practice cards they highlight which area of ECM the EYFS principle connects to!

haha how typical, none of the principles into practice cars mention future skills!

So basically EYFS does not help achieve future skills?!

hmm actually, (sorry I am thinking out loud!) is it that the whole 6 areas of L&D are what relates to ECM Future Skills. That would make sense? But it does depend what they mean by future skills. Curious.

I thought by future skills you meant acheiving economic well-being which is a very silly thing to expect of an under-5.

If you look on the ECM website the principles are:

  • be healthy
  • stay safe
  • enjoy and achieve
  • make a positive contribution
  • achieve economic well-being.

It must be the same thing do you think Frakkin? I'm doing my SEF and on there it refers to future skills.

Well I'd answer the question as asked so deal with future skills which is basically setting 'em up right!

What a load of pointless waffle - that will no doubt change again before we all get our heads around it.

navyeyelasH · 08/03/2010 15:11

Phew done it! This SEF is mammoth,I wonder how much I can get away with doing for my first inspection.
