CRB checks for families who recrut their own au pairs

Another question on this board about CRB checks for someone's step-Father, and another discussion about reference checking au pairs made me think...

What do families do about CRB checks if they are recruiting them from gumtree etc and they are here in the UK already..

Assume you just ignore it and aren't bothered about not having one..?

To clarify I mean getting a CRB check for the au pair.

CRB: Overseas Information Service
Visit that page, then click on the appropriate Country to find out what checks can be obtained in the country where the Au-Pair is coming from.

You can always ask an au pair to apply for a police check from her own country - in lots of places it's a lot simpler than the CRB system here. I got a police check from Germany in about 2 weeks, applied for from the UK.

At the moment an individual employing a nanny or au pair not through an agency can not get a CRB check done.

When the new system comes in it will be up to the au pair/nanny to apply to be on the ISA register, in fact it will be illegal not to be.

The question is about families who are recruiting au pairs from gumtree etc who are already in the UK. Some of these girls have been here for a long time so as well as getting a police check from their home country, they should also have a UK CRB check but families can't get one though I assume.

Nanny agencies will do a CRB check for a fee.

nannynick · 01/03/2010 22:46

islandofsodor - Domestic employment is exempt from compulsory ISA, so parents who employ a nanny or au-pair won't HAVE to check the ISA register.

Treeesa - If the au-pair registers with a nanny agency, then the agency could get the check done. I suppose UK based Au-Pair placement agencies could also get it done.

If the nanny or au pair comes through an agency they will have to be ISAd though, which puts au pair agencies in an interesting position when the candidate is from overseas.

When recruiting from most Western European countries a good candidate will volunteer their police record - to ask for it would be regarded as a perfectly normal request and it is easily obtainable.

A message for missus84. I also need to do a CRB check for an au pair coming from Germany. How exactly did you go about it? I tried the Home Office link but of course the site has completely changed and it is on DirectGov, but I couldn't find any information about getting a CRB check from another country?
Thanks

MMCQ - The Overseas info is now on the Businesslink website - How do I check a job applicant's criminal record? How to check an overseas applicant
This mentions getting a Certificate of Good conduct.

Thank you.

as someone above said, a police check might be very easy to get in some countries. in cz if you live or can travel to a city/town where the right office is, you just go in and walk out with the certificate in your hand. can be done though post which takes about two weeks.
i have had lots of ap/nanny jobs in the uk throught gumtree etc and never had a crb check done.

MMCQ- In germany it's called a "Polizeilichesfuehrungszeugnis". Very easy (and cheap) for the aupair to get hold of.
