What do you provide the nanny?

After speaking with another nanny I wondered as a nanny employer you provide your nanny with

A tv

The internet

A sofa to sit on

Magazines

Nice food - not junk food

during the work day?

OP posts:

As I'm a live-out nanny and I think you are referring mostly to a live-in nanny... I will say that during the working day, I get food and drink (tea, coffee etc), heating, lights the usual sort of things you might expect if you were at home yourself. I eat with the children and cook the same for myself and the children, so no special food.

BettyAndLenny · 24/02/2010 20:09

Hmmmm, this post seems strangely familiar.... I have a strong sense of deja vu here.

nowwearefour · 24/02/2010 20:09

My nanny is free to use anything in the house during dd's naps but i havent given her the password to my computer. she is free to make any food and eat it (but she generally eats with the dds), of course use our sofa (we didnt buy one specially!- same for the TV etc). Seems like an odd question. Do you not have a Tv, sofa, decent food in the house?

nowwearefour · 24/02/2010 20:11

ah i see - for a live in nanny. sorry. makes sense now. cant respond then as it doesnt apply in my case.

lobsters · 24/02/2010 20:12

I'm not sure if you're talking about live in or live out. Our live out nanny has the run of house during the day I(except our room and DH's study), so she can watch the TV in the lounge, she has a log on on the laptop, clearly there are sofas in the lounge. We tend to swap magazines as we have similar tastes, i wouldn't buy them just for her. She can eat what we have in, I do buy what she asks, but I wouldn't buy extra nice stuff just for her.

Clearly she also has unlimited free tea and coffee (which I don't get at work), and she borrows my books ( did offer she didn't just take)

BettyAndLenny · 24/02/2010 20:20
Hmm
Strix · 24/02/2010 22:35

Everything but the mags.

EColi · 24/02/2010 22:36

No Magazines - but all the rest plus some lovely children to play with

Simplyme · 24/02/2010 23:40

are you talking about all that stuff for her during a lunch break or while she should be working?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2010 00:17

well obviously all would be nice

what would i rate top of list

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

sofa,food,mags, internet,tv

frakkinaround · 25/02/2010 08:41

I think not being allowed to sit on a sofa is quite weird, food is pretty essential (but then I tend to eat with the children), magazines I only read if they're lying around and I have time because the children are asleep but I wouldn't expect them to be there, ditto internet and TV.

Betty.....ditto.

Strix · 25/02/2010 08:46

I think OP was asking employers if their live-in nanny has a sofa in her bedroom, and not whether or not employers let her sit on the sofa in the living room.

And I think the food question was about whether you buy her whatever she wants or tell her get by on Tesco Value (yuck! shiver... can't imagine!) I don't buy the nanny every convenience item she lives by, but I do make the same budgetary sacrifices I expect her to make.

Strix · 25/02/2010 08:48

"she lives by" was meant to say "she asks for" Really should proof read.

frakkinaround · 25/02/2010 08:50

But she said 'during the work day' which is odd phrasing for a live in nanny having a sofa etc in her bedroom. To me that means during working hours does the nanny have access to XYZ.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2010 10:03

betty+frakk-same here lol

strix, trust me it is not live in, its a thread about a thread from another site - and yes i need to proof read, but never do just as others dont ,as there is no edit button

BettyAndLenny · 25/02/2010 10:11

It's a thread about a thread from another site that stirred up lots of trouble and resulted in people being banned from said other site...

NannyNorthLlondon · 25/02/2010 10:26

if you dont let your nanny to stay on the sofa, where is she gonna sit? on the floor? I really dont get some off you... no common sense at all and you ask yourself why the nanny doesnt stay in your family for long time. All you expect is that probably she will stay on her feet everyday, work and work , eat your shit chicken nuggets sort out your laundry, ironing and cooking plus make sure the kids are ok.. wtf?

Strix · 25/02/2010 10:31

Take a chill pill, NNL. Where do you see those words on this thread? Or are you talking about some othr thread which some of us know nothing about?

NannyNorthLlondon · 25/02/2010 10:42

Strix is not about any threads , is about what happens in real life! This is how some employers are and if you have doubts about providing you nanny with a sofa and some nice food what kind of person are you(referring to the op)?the internet, magazines and Tv are a plus, but obviously nannies like any other workers needs to put her feet up for 10 minutes.

Strix · 25/02/2010 10:52

Who are these employers? I mean who lives in a house with no sofa? And who doesn't have any food in the house for nanny to prepare as and when she wants?

The nanny eats the same quality of food I eat. I make mine. She makes hers.

Nanny has a sofa in her bedroom. It is exactly like the one we all sit on in the living room.

I have no idea when or where she puts her feet up... possibly at the gym, possibly elsewhere. But, I certainly don't send her out to the street when she wants to sit down.

I don't know anyone who treats their nanny in the manner in which you suggest.

frakkinaround · 25/02/2010 11:30

Well you might not have a sofa if you just moved house, and I did work for who a crazy woman said we had to plump the cushions back on the sofa whenever we sat on it (not practical....) so we never sat on it.

No food if you haven't gone shopping? But those things are tenuous to the extreme!

I think I would kind of assume that anywhere I worked was going to have a sofa and food, which is not unreasonable IMO but if they've just moved or I'm working out of a hotel I'm not going to create about the fact they don't have one.

And my homemade chicken nuggets are perfectly nice and healthy in moderation.

Strix · 25/02/2010 11:33

Oh, do you have a nice homemade nugget recipe you could share?

frakkinaround · 25/02/2010 11:36

Would you like batter or breadcrumbs?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2010 11:39

i use crunchy nut cornflakes and kids love them!!

Strix · 25/02/2010 11:40

whichever is healthier. (ha ha, probably neither)
