Help me think of "literal" small world toys.

By literal I mean things a child would do day to day. IE not pirates, not farm, not dinosaurs etc.

I have a child with autism and we are trying to "teach" him how to play - it's best if we start of with things he gets, like going to bed, going in the car etc. But I can't find toys like this. Have to be chunky so that all children can play with them I'm thinking like playmobil stuff.

But can't think/find anything

Have you tried the happy land toys from the early learning center? They are nice and chunky and include things like a vets, school, shop etc If you look on ebay they are always loads on there which would be cheaper then getting them new

Little People (simlar to Happy Land)
Has people, cars, animals, furniture etc

MrsBadger · 24/02/2010 18:22

yes happyland or little people, or wooden dolls' house from Plan or pintoy

the vintage Fisher Price stuff is ace too eg house school

Shoshe · 24/02/2010 18:22

Navy I had a autisic little boy, he loved [http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fisher-Price-Dolls-House_W0QQitemZ140384373939QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Toys_PreS choolRL?hash=item20af8f8cb3#ht500wt_975]] house with the furniture and dolls that go with it, it was brilliant for him.

If you search Loving Family in ebay you will find them.

buses and cars

dd likes these more than flash modrrn ones - my mum got her this baby set when ds was born and she was thrilled

Are you looking for small world toys with "people" in them or suggestions for pretend play? If the latter, how about kitchen stuff - plates, bowls, spoons, saucepans etc and a play kitchen perhaps.

MrsBadger · 24/02/2010 18:33

'small world' has a specific meaning in eyfs etc and is dolls' houses etc as suggested below

play kitchens etc are a different 'area'

navyeyelasH · 24/02/2010 18:40

We have a pretend kitchen but it's not something he has experienced before (ie. he doesn't cook enough) so he doesn't get it. Thanks though coral.

Car is a good idea (thanks!) as he gets in the car every day, school he might get, and house is too "big" IYSWIM? It needs to be broken down, like brushing teeth, going to bed, eating food ummm other stuff that I can't think of. Stuff that he does regularly really.

If you show him a toy pram he tries to get in it as he doesn't understand why else you would be giving it to him - imaginative play is actually cognitively amazing really!

Thanks for all the suggestions keep them coming!

I think as well it needs to be a whole "kit" to make it more life like thinking about it more. ie, not just a car but a car and a street and people and a purpose. A reason to "play".

like this would be good ideally these sized things inside largeish room that aren't to fiddly.

sylvanian families?

Littlefish · 24/02/2010 19:12

Playmobil do a range of "home" sort of things. We bought the "brushing teeth" set, the bunk bed set, the bathroom set etc.

Could you buy one of those mats with all the roads on to put cars on?

navyeyelasH · 24/02/2010 19:19

littlefish I do have one of those mats thinking about it, so will just get some cars that you can put people inside rather than the racing car types. Will get some signs and other things too I think. I will try and find the playmobil sets, are they from the 123 range?

Bumnoise - sylvanian families is an option - I'm just not sure if the fact that they are squirrels (?) will matter.

Playmobil?

Happy Land

Littlefish · 24/02/2010 21:44

I think they were just from the normal range, but I'll have a little search online and see if I can find them for you.

Littlefish · 24/02/2010 21:57

How about this range?

Littlefish · 24/02/2010 22:05

Lots of different ranges on this page
