How many breaks during a 12 hour day?

My nanny is employed for 12 hours from 7.30am - 7.30pm. What amount of time off is she entitled to?

What do you mean? Assuming you work, are you planning to come home to give her a break???

Nannies generally take their break when the child is sleeping, or will have some downtime when the child is playing by themselves.

I am a nanny working 7-7 and I don't have time off for a break I just get a cup of tea/coffee whenever I can and eat my lunch with my charge who is 3yrs while holding newborn baby. I would not expect to have a break.

unfortunally nannies cant leave the house for an hour to go and get lunch

so we take breaks as and when we can, without the welfare/care of our charge being compromised

so yes i sit down with a cuppa when kids playing/watching tv/in bed and have lunch/use lappy etc

saying that pennies will be about, so yes you could say to your nanny at say 1pm, to sit down and have a peaceful lunch if you wanted to

my tuesdays i dash about from home, to school,to nursery, to younger dc tumbletots, to nursery ,to middle tumbltots, to school, to older 2 tennis lesson and then to station to pick up mb and i manage to stuff a sandwich down my throat either in the car or while middle dc is in tumbletots, but thats not till 1.30pm and blonde is starving by then

Thanks. As blondes said I will be around and the DCs will be at school most of the time so it seems fair that she does get a break (she's doing housekeeping stuff too). I was going to say an hour for lunch and 2 x 20 min breaks as and when she has time but not all taken together.

Domestic employees are exempt from the usual directives regading working time. See Direct.gov for more clarification. They are also exempt from working time limits

In your situation I wouldn't write any entitlement into the contract but tell her that when it is possible she can have a break of x mintues at x point during the day, but it's at your discretion and you can ask her to work through it, so if it's a really busy day you don't have to stress yourself factoring in breaks and she'll have to do what most nannies do and grab it when she can.
