Is it possible to find a nanny for just one day a week?

Like the subject line says...

I'm currently working freelance, but I have an opportunity to get an office job for two days a week starting May (assuming the project gets the go-ahead). DH will be taking one day off, and would like a nanny for the other day. I just want to know from the nannies on this board if that is reasonable, or if it is just too little to make it worth your while. I'm in Wales and have only one dd, aged three.

Thanks in advance

there are lots of nannies who would be willing to work 1 day a week.

maybe someone with another 3 / 4 day job, or a nanny who is now a mummy who wants to still do a bit of nannying...

or an older more experianced nanny living with her OH / DH who doesnt need or want to work full time

In theory it's possible. In practice I'm not sure how many would do it.
It would need to be a fixed day, then you will need to find someone who wants to work just that day. Suspect they would fit it around another job, so working for you would be a second job.

Oh good, you didn't just throw it out of the window straight away

nannynick, I agree that finding someone who is free on the exact day I need her isn't going to be easy. But I am flexible (ish) so hopefully can meet a hypothetical nanny half-way.

I just didn't want to go out looking for someone with a completely outlandish proposal so thought I'd run it by the MN jury first

I am a nanny and only work 3 days a week and have been looking for a wednesday job with no luck yet.
Im sure you would find someone, i know alot of nannies that are looking for a extra days work

SuperDuperJezebel · 09/02/2010 13:18

I agree with Crispycakes - both my friend and I work 4 days and are keen on finding one day jobs, so I'm sure there will be other nannies who are too!

I know quite a few nannies from toddler groups, school gates etc, and almost all work for 1, 2 , or 3 days a week for different people, rather than the whole 5 days with one family.

I've just hired a nanny for 2 mornings a week. I could be flexible with days so fitted around her other work commitments.

None of you in Cardiff, are you? It couldn't be that easy could it?

Thanks for all your replies, it really helps

I had a nanny for 1 day a week, and now have one for 1.5 days. We went through an agency which made it easier as they could just send me the nannies with some availability for 1 or 2 days. It has been brilliant for us. We carried on having our nanny when I was on maternity leave with DD2 and both girls really benefitted.

have a look on your local childcare section of netmums and also on nannyjob

i know many nannies who work 2/3/4days and want a one day job

obv the same day helps

A little pointer for you - make sure you agree a gross salary, as if she has another job she is likely to be using all her tax allowance on that one.

LastTrainToGeneva · 09/02/2010 20:43

Thanks for that everyone. Off to have a look on netmums (oops ). Thanks for the tip about the gross salary nbee, I would never have thought of it.

I have managed to find nannies to do just two mornings a week. The place I have had the most success with is www.findababysitter.co.uk

You have to pay to join for a month, then you place your ad. I got loads and loads of responses - many totally unsuitable, but a few good ones.
