CMs - have you (& DCs) had the Swine Flu jab?

My DD (16m) is booked in for the jab on Tues. I am really dithering about it, I'm very uneasy for some reason, I wasn't at all with the MMR but this Swine Flu one really makes me feel uneasy, I expect you'll all think I'm completely stupid now!

Anyway, I'm concerned that if DD doesn't have it then the mindees parents will think she's putting their children at risk. Also, I haven't had the jab either, as a CM should I be asking to have it?

Strangely I don't mind me having it, but if something happened to DD I'd never forgive myself! Then again, Swine Flu isn't nice either is it .... you see my dilemma!

Well unless all of your minded children have had the jab too then she wont be putting them at risk, anyway i am sure there are lots of people your minded children come into contact with who have not had it, so no way would i have my child vaccinated on those grounds if i was unsure about it.
My ds was offered it cos he has asthma but ds and myself had swine flu in october so dont see the point in getting him done.

bigdonna · 07/02/2010 22:55

im a cm and only 1 of my mindees has had the flu jab nor me or my dc have not.

AntirrhinumMajus · 07/02/2010 23:42

DD has had it (she is 12 & has underlying conditions) So has DH same reason

I can't have it - some of my mindees have & some haven't

DD was quite poorly so I guess she would have had SF fairly badly - but really who knows?

Sazisi · 07/02/2010 23:58

Nobody would think you stupid to be concerned for your daughter

Me, dh , my 3 kids and my mindee have had it.

We were all fine, although DD2 had a bit of a reaction: v&d for 2 days, but she only felt poorly intermittently during that time. I kind of expected her to react quite badly, she tends to suffer the worst from jabs, however she also tends to suffer the worst from viruses so on balance I felt she should have it

If you're really unsure, I think you should put it off a while/indefinitely you should not feel that you have to put your DD at risk to placate your mindees' parents.

Dont have any DC's to have it, but I got Swine Flu in on November 4th.

I was closed for a week, went back to work, but was still very very exhausted, I was very lucky that DH was on leave and could do all the non hands on work for me, couldn't get rid of the cough, was really not well still and probably should not have been open, in fact wouldn't have been if DH was not here.

I live on a Army Base, parents here dont have the back up of family, so I opened.

On the 28th of November, my lung collasped and I ended up in hospital, diagnoised with pneumonia (had actually had it 10 days).

I was then closed for another 10 days, which put my families in a very hard postion, and left me without a wage.

Yes I do have underlying health factors, but if I had been offered the jab I would definitly have said yes.

atworknotworking · 08/02/2010 07:25

As I understand it the jab works against the current strain of SF, they are expecting the strain to mutate just as cold viruses do, therefore the current jab would be ineffective should that happen. Also if you have had the jab for this strain you will not be able to have another one if you catch the next strain therefore being unprotected and unable to be treated for it.

I feel that I wouldn't have it or my DD unless I / she had symptoms enough to warrant it, just incase we did get a strain of it in the future.

I can quite understand though those of you who have had it suggesting to have the vaccination it must have been pretty rough.

looneytune · 08/02/2010 08:31

Haven't read the whole thread but no, I haven't and won't be having it. 19m old ds2 was offered and declined and if ds1 (6) is offered, he also won't be having it. I'm not risking mindees as they will have made their own decision and are either protected or taking the same risk as us. I respect anyone else's decision but my own research made me decide NOT to go ahead.

So, do what YOU think is best x

underpaidandoverworked · 08/02/2010 09:38

Having had swine flu I would say go for it and have whatever jabs you are offered - the side-affects can't be anywhere near as bad as having the 'lurgy'. It took me months to get over my bout last summer and my immune system is now very low, I catch anything and everything that is thrown my way .

saintlydamemrsturnip · 08/02/2010 09:48

You can't make a decision for your dd based on your mindees.

Any vaccination can have a side effect, so you have to make the choice based on what is best for her.

Anyone who says otherwise has never seen vaccine damage.

That doesn't mean don't have the jab, just means you do not have to feel that you should include mindees in your decision for your dd (by all means include them in a decision about you - that's your choice to make, but not your dd).

lollipopmother · 08/02/2010 21:48

Thank you all for your replies, it's been very helpful. I cancelled DDs appointment today and I think I'll not get her vaccinated after all. DF said the same as Atworknotworking and thinks that I should rush her to the doc for a jab if she looks like she's got symptoms as I am obviously not convinced that having it is a good idea - I think he just said this to stop me from having a nervous breakdown but it's made me feel easier anyway!
