Luvverly (but complicated) Nanny Share Cash

We have found a really wonderful nanny for our DS, to share with another family. The nanny would work in the following pattern (complicated) and so I'm not sure what would be the fairest amount of cash to pay her.

Mon-Tues
Our DS spends the day at share's house with their DS2, and their DS1 comes home at 3pm. In total lovely nanny will look after our son for 11 hours a day, most of them with one other child and 2 hours of them with two other children.

Wednes - Fri
Our DS spends morning at our home alone with nanny. At 1pm they will go to share's house, picking up their DS2 from nursery on the way. Their DS1 will come home as usual from school. So still 11 hours a day, but with only really sharing during the afternoon.

I want to keep this nanny forever (she's outstanding) for our DS! We are in Surrey/Greater London. What's a fair weekly rate?

Do you mean the weekly cash for activities kitty? Or are you meaning what salary they should be paid and how that is split between the two families?

One way may be to split each day into 2 parts - Morning and Afternoon (2x5.5 hour sessions)
On a Monday and Tuesday both families are using the nanny for both sessions. Their DS1 being there for part of the time makes no odds, as nannies are not paid per child but per family, plus during school holidays their DS1 would presumably be around more.

Monday: Family 1 Sessions = 2, Family 2 Sessions = 2
Tuesday: Family 1 Sessions = 2, Family 2 Sessions = 2

Wed to Fri AM only you are having the nanny in the morning but that will be different if nursery/school are closed.
So during term time, you get 1:1 care for your child, so that's a double-session... giving you 3 sessions that day.
Wednesday: Family 1 Sessions = 3, Family 2 Sessions = 1
Thursday: Family 1 Sessions = 3, Family 2 Sessions = 1
Friday: Family 1 Sessions = 3, Family 2 Sessions = 1

So weekly allocation during School Term Time (assuming children are at Nursery/School and not sick) then Family 1 = 13 Family 2 = 7
So you could divide the weekly salary by 20, then multiply out.

During school holidays though it will be different. You would both probably be having 10 sessions each.

All sounds rather complex to me though. Do you really need to split things based on the nannies time with each family? You both need childcare 5 days a week, so you could split costs 50:50 couldn't you?

I would just split it 50/50. You have more hours, they have more children. Seems fair to me.

Also, your use of the word "cash" is a bit worrying. Do you meant that you intend to pay her cash in hand?

Thanks, I thought 50:50 sounded OK but wanted to make sure I wasn't being cheeky with the other family. And I will pay her tax/NI for her via Nannytax, and wages via DD, much too scared of authority to do anthing else!

I would suggest 50/50 they have more children, you have more hours, the share seems to take place in their house.

Nannies are usually paid 30-50% more per hr for a nanny share then the families split that eg - if going rate is £7 an hr in your area then maybe £9-£10 an hr for a share would be fair and each family pays 50/50 of that rate.

I mean 50/50 of her agreed rate, which yes of course would be a bit higher than if she wa working for just one family. However, 30-50% is rather ermm... shall we say ambitious.

I think an extra 10-20% is more than reasonable. So each family would pay 55-60% of the usual rate. So each family save 40-45% over hiring a nanny alone. And, the nanny gets a 10-20% uplift in pay, which is a good deal all around if you ask me.
