Nannies/Childminders - How much?

I am starting to look for childcare as I'm planning to return to work after Easter for three days a week. How much can I expect to pay per hour for childminders and nannies? I live in Blackheath, London and my daughter will be 9 months old by then.

Thank you.

Can you provide details of typical start and finish time?

A childminder will be cheaper than a nanny, as a childminder cares for children from more than one family at a time, where as a nanny comes to your home and would only care for your child.

I start work at 8am so looking for care probably between 7.30am - 5ish Tue, Wed & Thurs.

So if you were to call it 30 hours a week... a nannies salary may be in region of £350-£420 gross per week. So adding on Employers NI, a cost to you of say £20k-£24k before adding on other misc costs (such as payroll, heating/light/food, mileage, activities etc).
Childminding fees I expect would be in the region of £40-£70 per day based on a 3-day per week contract - so £120-£210 a week. Contact either Lewisham FIS or Greenwich FIS (not sure which your address would fall under - may be wise to contact both) for a list of childminders... that may give you a better clue as to typical prices in the area.
There are some childminders in the area who occasionally post on here, so they may be able to give an indication of current fees.
A nanny though as you can see is likely to be twice the cost, or more.

I can't recommend this site highly enough
It's great for finding childminders

Hi,
I have an au pair that has turned out after one week to be unsuitable for the job she agreed to do. I am looking on au pair world for a replacement but supply is down (perhaps due to the weak pound??). I was wondering if anyone knows other good sites to use. Friends of mine that went through agencies warned me off them... Any help appreciated. PS. I am new to this site so if I have posted this in the wrong location, feel free to shout at me.

hi,
www.childcare.co.uk or netmums
a good site.
hope this helps

StarExpat · 02/02/2010 15:14

I agree with elisha31, netmums (I know we're not meant to mention that site here) but their local childcare board is excellent for finding a childminder, nanny, au pair, babysitter...etc.
www.childcare.co.uk is very good, too.

You could try greataupair.com as well
