Does my mother/mother-in-law need to have a CRB check?

I am a Childminder and every wednesday my mother comes over to spend some time with my son whilst I mind the other children. Every so often my mother-in-law pops over to spend some time with my son too. My mum stays most of the day and we may pop out for a walk with the kids or go to a baby group, my mother pushes my son in the buggy and I'm always in charge of the other mindees, never leaving my mother alone with them (not that she can't be trusted!) I was just wondering, does she need a CRB for being around the mindees on days like this or is signing in a visitors book enough?

This document is handy Factsheet: Requirements for written documents - childminders delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage dated April 2009. Scroll down to Question 3, where it says about a visitor log not being a requirement for childminders.
Also there is a section in EYFS Statutory Framework with regard to CRB checks.
The following should be noted: "Providers must not allow people whose suitability has not been checked to have unsupervised contact with children who are being cared for."

So my view is that whilst your Mother-in-law is a frequent visitor, now that it's the EYFS documents that apply rather than older documents... you don't need to get a CRB check done on them - though you must never leave them alone with a minded child.

The new ISA system kicks in soon, so if the option of her registering under that is permitted (I don't know if it is) then she could do that, so that parents can be reassured that she is suitable to be around young children.

Thanks nannynick although where I come from in Wales we do not do the EYFS so I don't know if and how it would apply.

Rules in Wales may well be different. Wish Mumsnet would add a flag next to the persons name as I knew which country they were posting from!

Alas you are on your own with rules in Wales... maybe someone will know.

Calling all CM's in Wales!
