Still looking for a nanny...

I wrote here a while ago (in early december) saying that we were looking for a part-time nanny, 3 days, possibly with her own child or nannyshare. In the end we've made the decision that it's far too much hassle to go down the route of nanny with her own child (there are concerns I have about that option) & we haven't been lucky with nannyshares. So we're trying to find a straightforward nanny for 3 days a week & there are a couple of ok candidates so far. Here's a couple of questions I have:

  1. Could you point me (once again) to a good calculator so that I can figure out pay plus tax?

  2. We require 3 days of 8 hours each (24 hours all in all), with the possibility of flexibility i.e. change in days in the future etc. We've found some good candidates but some of them want 30 hours a week (slightly more than we need) & some of them want 10£ net per hour (slightly more than we can pay). Combining the 2- 30 hours a week at 10£ per hour- is just going to be too expensive, I feel. Do you think there are other things I could offer the potential nannies (who have these requirements) in order to make the position more attractive & bring down the rate a bit (say, to 9£ per hour).

  • Can you spread the hours diferently if that helps the nanny? i.e. 2 daysx10hrs and 1dayx4hours. That way she might be able to do another job in the afternoon of the 3nd day and make the extra cash. Especially if you have any ftiend who needs help one afternoon.
  • Extra holidays?
Maria2007loveshersleep · 13/01/2010 10:56

Yes, extra holidays is part of the package anyway because we travel a lot (go back to see parents). Thanks for the idea about spreading the hours differently...although I'm not sure that'll necessarily work.

Buy her bus pass (not sure where you live so that may not be applicable). But our nanny gets a greaqter London bus bpass which obviously also works for the weekends. SO all of her tranporations costs are covered.

We also give her a gym membership, which is needed for the job and therefore not taxable. But, it too works on weekends and in the evening.

What about adding some hours in the form of weekly babysitting. Maybe every Wednesday night you and DH could go out for a meal, or whatever you like to do.

Actually the idea of a regular babysitting 'slot' sounds good, because DP & I try to do that anyway, so we could include it to make the position closer to 30 hours. That might work...

waves to maria

i use this to work out my salary roughly when going for new jobs but obv doesnt have employers ni - but sure nick will have one

if £10nett is too much for you, then i would think again about a nanny with own child - or are you 100% against this?

as you are only paying 24hrs, the nanny is almost 100% going to have to find another 2 day job,so prob cant be flexible with days

if you do need flexibilty then you will have to pay for that day

you could offer a nights babysitting thrown in to make hours up

you could also not include those 6hrs in tax, but that would be naughty, and obv blondes isnt telling you to do that, just a suggestion

a lot of holidays is nice,as long as you pay the nanny for all the time off you take and not just 4weeks

tiggergirl · 03/02/2010 09:34

you could make up the wages with what my boss does she includes expensive like travel outing etc which is not taxable

how is it going maria?

Maria2007loveshersleep · 05/02/2010 21:46

Hi, well we found someone in the end for 3 full days a week. She's lovely & everything we would ask for, and in the end we decided to pay the 10£ net per hour because we felt she's so very good...
