Hello all

I am needing some fast advice please if any of you are able to help....... My car had broken down and I am thinking of asking a friend to use theirs while mine is being fixed. However I am unsure if I would be covered (My insurance does allow me to drive others cars) because I would using it for my business use. Has any of you done this or know if I would be covered? Thanks

You need to ring your insurance company and check, I think.

My cover would only be third party driving other cars and is in my documentation I received with my policy doc explaining this. But better to be safe than sorry on checking with them.

If not, they can probably fix you up with a stand alone policy to cover you whilst driving it instead.

Not exactly the same but my old car developed a terminal dangerous fault and while we were without a car for a week or so we borrowed dh dads car. We could not insure it other than third party as we did not own it, (checked with insurance co)so dfil put dh on as a named driver so he would be fully comp. It was a bit tricky as dh uses car for work so needed buisness cover. If we had a hire car I think it would have been ok.
Does your garage have a courtesy car while yours is being fixed. Insurance co siad we could have tansferred like for like insurance to a courtesy car but as we were scrapping it, this didn't apply.

When my car goes to the garage I get a hire car from the garage... and insure it myself through my insurer. You just need to call the insurer, explain the situation and they will then tell you if they are able to cover that or not. There can be an additional fee, as the car type is different to your own, plus their admin charges!
If you hire a car via a hire car company, you may find that the hire car companies own insurance covers the car sufficiently, as it can sometimes be better cover than your have on your own car. If it isn't sufficient cover, your own insurer can sometimes cover the hire car (or additional elements of cover needed, such as transporting passengers for whom you are paid to transport as part of your job - hire&reward).

So, call your insurer. Tell them the details of the car - make, model, reg number, engine size... see what they quote for say a week's cover as per your existing policy.
