right - RA for snow play

After playing out the snow all week i have realised that I haven't RA'd this activity :

have created one - c and p:

RISK ASSESSMENT FOR SNOW PLAY
Area of potential hazard Risks How can risk be controlled? How can children be involved in controlling the risk? Any further action required?

Slipping on the path to the house from the pavement Minor/major injury, cuts, abrasion, bruising Clearing the path, salting/gritting it before the children arrive; if snow very deep then leave path uncleared in case ice forms. Judge each occasion separately.
Hold hands if needed. Ask them to take care, to not run on the path
Snowball in eyes/face Minor/major eye or face injury Snowballs to be thrown away from people; discourage throwing at people Speak to the children about why we don?t throw at people particularly their faces
Using sledges Minor/major injury, cuts, abrasion, bruising, collisions Make sure that the slope is clear of people or equipment before each run down the slope; younger children not allowed to descend alone, I will take them using the rope Remind the children why we wait our turn to descend
Going in the car RTA, minor/major injuries, cuts, abrasion, bruising I have decided that I will not take my car out in snow, and all parents are aware of this. The children are safer with me at home or playing safely outside. If we are out when it starts to snow we shall return to my setting straight away

what have I forgotten?

PS the c and paste is supposed to be a table hope you can work it backwards to a table in your head

going for a walk anywhere in the snow...?
What about frozen pipes is that too far? Death by icicle?

Think that's it though, looks good!

nannynick · 07/01/2010 22:26

Children getting cold. I found that hot lemon squash in a flask worked well to warm children up (well, apart from the child who refused to drink it).
Suitable clothing, boots, gloves, hat etc.

You would be using your usual RA for going on outings, plus this one... is that right? If so, then some things will be on the other RA.

Something about wet clothes/ice burn/need to ensure children are wearing appropriate clothing (especially hats)?

Hypothermia?!

When I've taken classes of children into the snow I've tried to make sure that everyone's wearing a hat and that I've got enough spare socks and other clothing in class for them to change into so that no-one has to sit in soggy clothes for the day. I've never done a risk assessment though.

yy nick, I think all else is covered by other RAs

We can't go far from the house as on foot so no need to take supplies apart from FA kit

(tbh I am a bit scared of A falling over and B a car sliding into the party so we stay v close to house and garden, just venturing to nearby slope, no road to cross phew)

I'm surprised a childminder goes out the door! I'm exhausted just by the risk assessment let alone taking that risk LOL

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/01/2010 22:51

hah kbear and I have another dozen or so similar to that

not to mention policies/procedures/flowcharts/observations/short medium long term plans/logs/folders

etc etc

I can't really compete but I have a wonderful RA that I did for taking 30+ 10/11 year olds from London to North Wales by train. I got quite bored and to liven it up got carried away with possible abduction scenarios, trains cutting children's heads off, bags falling onto train lines etc. etc.

oh lol at you SE13, brilliant catastrophising

It was mainly in response to a LA request for an updated RA after a child, whilst swimming, broke his tooth. When I asked him what happened he explained very clearly, "I was doing a handstand but forgot to put my hands down". My updated RA included the advice, "when attempting handstands in a swimming pool I will remind children to put their hands down". Apparently this wasn't quite what they had in mind .
