Dry messy play ideas?

navyeyelasH · 05/01/2010 23:35

I have a specific activity in mind to get one of my under 2s used to messy pay (he hates being mucky). So am thinking dry messy play I know I can use pasta etc but I am looking for good ways to use rainbow rice.

He loves colours so that should encourage him to get involved but I need more than that I think. Am going to use funnels and few jars as he likes pouring.

Is there anything else that I can add to the rice to make it more sensory? I can't think [need to sleep]!

Glitter?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/01/2010 23:39

add lentils, dried beans perhaps?

looneytune · 05/01/2010 23:41

Was going to say what boys said, also raisins, hole punch pieces if you have any. I think glitter would also be lovely but if they hate mess, I'd probably steer clear for now and that sticks to EVERYTHING lol.

Cereals like rice crispies, cheerios?

looneytune · 05/01/2010 23:43

Forgot the colour, cereal not very colourful. Hmmmm

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/01/2010 23:43

cereals - goood call looney

bonkerz · 05/01/2010 23:44

we use lentils, porridge oats, dried beans, cous cous, rice, pasta of all shapes including baby pasta, pearl barley.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/01/2010 23:44

the colour is in the rainbow rice, the texture would be varied by the cereal

cheerios v good idea because you could link circle/shapes into play

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/01/2010 23:45

gawd I love this bouncing ideas

navyeyelasH · 05/01/2010 23:46

I was hoping for colours but can only thing of pasta coloured things. What about those rainbow drop sweets, they'd be ok?

Loving hole punch circles - now I need a billion of them somehow

I would love to do glitter but I think he finds is scratchy but will put it in the other mindees bowls.

I want something that's long, thin and see through; like a tubs they can pour through too.

Obviously can get coloured pasta. Do you have any wool? We have great bright coloured stuff here (usually used for hair on puppets - you know, wooden spoons and straws lol).......thought maybe could chop loads of small bits of that? Yeah, whole punches no good unless got some - I always have loads but only white but could use coloured paper if had time. Peas would be great if they didn't thaw too quick - shame can't buy them ready shriveled (you know, when you find a pea hidden under the table days later!! lol)

Errrrr.....

looneytune · 05/01/2010 23:54

Yeah, buttons are fab If you have tinfoil, maybe cut some small pieces of that so sort of glittery without the glitter??

navyeyelasH · 05/01/2010 23:55

hmm looney tune you might be onto something can't you buy dried peas in a box? I'm sure I have seen them in Tesco. Will have a nose.

We have wool but I hate touching it it literaly makes me weep so can't deal with that!

I'm trying to buy the little circles online, someone must have them!

There is a really cool scrapstore by me. I'm going to try them too. Am excited now.

Thanks for the ideas, keep em coming (I'm going to bed!)

or with the foil, could screw some bits into little balls?

looneytune · 05/01/2010 23:57

Oh if they do that with peas then go for it, fab colour!! Forget the wool then, would have probably clumped together anyway!

I'll keep thinking. Been in bed since before 8pm and STILL awake lol (can't help but keep looking out the window at the huge amount of snow!!!)

Night x

bonkerz · 05/01/2010 23:59

you can buy dried marrow fat peas in a box.....about 40p a box!

navyeyelasH · 06/01/2010 00:00

no snow here looney, not yet anyway! Foil another brill idea thanks so much.

As an aside did you know those little hole punch thingies are called chads!?!

You learn something new everyday

looneytune · 06/01/2010 00:00

Where, I've feel the need to buy lots of different coloured beans etc. now!!

looneytune · 06/01/2010 00:01

Hmmm chads, no I didn't lol.

As for snow - we're due up to 40cm!!!! I've had to cancel school runs for tomorrow as not possible to walk it and police saying not to drive anywhere unless absolutely necessary. It's sooooo pretty out there though. I feel a trip to the park for a HUGE snowman coming on

looneytune · 06/01/2010 00:04

Depending on what you're using to pour i.e. funnel no good for this one......coloured feathers? We have packs of those and they have all sorts of bright colours. Just another thought.

TINKERBELLE33 · 06/01/2010 00:05

Dried out compost can be fun too, especially if put in a tray with coloured card in the bottom which shows through when the compost is moved. Great for creative/pre-writing development.

BertieBotts · 06/01/2010 00:18

How about dried herbs, spices, things like garlic granules, cumin seeds, that have a strong scent?
