Hi i have my first inspection next week, what should i expect?

How long will she stay?
What will she want to see?

I,m not sure if im doing enough EYFS stuff, how many observations should i be doing and how often? Should i be planning activities daily or just one big activity a week? Should i be doing activities for each child or one for them all and say what they each benefit from it?

Sorry lots of questions but im really nervous about it and ive only been minding 2 months so still new to all of it

Thanks

Hi buggylovinmummy

I have been childminding nearly 3 years and had my inspection in 2008 which was still under the National Standards/Birth to three however I did get an outstanding so I hope my tips can help.....you should do these all the time not just for the inspection.....it will make your life easier.

Ask for ID when they knock/have a visitors book

Do you have a notice board? Display the ofsted parents poster which has osfteds phone number on it (see ofsted website)

Make sure your paperwork is up to date - signed in the right places.

All contents of first aid kit in date? Have notepad/pen in first aid box with childrens names/dob and emerg contact numbers in.

Wear rubber gloves for nappy changes/wipe mat (antibac) in between changes

Give each child a peg in the bathroom with their own sep hand towel (especially with swine flu now).....likewise with pegs in the hall etc for coats - give them a name tag or a picture if too young to read for their peg.

Make sure ALL sockets are covered if you have LOs.

Do a healthy snack with the children - don't let them get hungry, it can be easy to forget their needs when you are flustered by ofsted but DONT! Maybe have a piece of paper and plan your day and stick it on the kitchen cupboard (this will be part of your planning so ofsted will approve).

If you are looking after babies have a treasure basket.

Make a Singing Sack (nursery rhyme props (ie a toy bus for wheels on the bus etc) and get the LOs to take turns choosing a prop then have a sing song (don't be embarrassed about singing infront of inspector)!

Have a good mixture of toys & books out - use your local library to borrow books which are dual language/multicultural, you should be displaying positive images of all society.........this can be through posters, puzzles, toys book, dressing up/role play, again try your local toy library if time is short.

Relax and just ignore them your job is the children not making inspectors tea and biscuits, just offer a glass of water!

Re activities.....I have monthly themes and do a different activity every day (this can range from painting, dressing up, water play etc etc) I can give you some great websites for activities if you like?????? I had an 18 month old and a 21 month old when I had my inspection and did playdough while she was there which they loved (the LOs)......followed by singing and a session in the garden but it was June!

You can link each activity to the EYFS....eg Painting is Creative Development - Exploring Media and Material

How old are your mindees?

I hope I haven't scared you!! Feel free to ask me more questions!

Good luck xx

althe8s this has helped me loads I have my first inspection soon too. I really want to get outstanding [ambitious]!

Can I ask you about the paperwork a little bit too please? I'm making a check-list, what have I forgotten?

*Visitors book
*complaints book
*policies and procedures
*risk assessments
contractsconsent forms
medical logs (like when I give medicine)
Planning Observations
Scrapbooks that go between me and parents
*References from parents
*copies of newsletters
*Fridge temp
*List of children's emergency contact that I take out with me
*Info between me and children's other settings
*Ofsted poster
*attendance Register
*ofsted cert and insurance displayed
*Mot, tax other car stuff together

Other Misc things that need to be considered

*First Aid box (what needs to be in there? Like your idea of keeping list of emergency contacts and pen etc)
*Toy labels
*planning resources

What have I missed off?

What else do I

navyeyelasH · 04/01/2010 23:34

Bump!

I know there are loads of good CMers on here, spill the beans

Allthe8s · 05/01/2010 09:05

Hi NavyeyelasH - all looks good to me......do you use NCMA publications (accident/incident book, register etc?)

Don't forget confidentiality with all your paperwork this is so important.

Toy labels are really good I have these on my boxes (a picture of the toy and word) this is good for PSED - Self care (choosing toys independently).

Have a look on www.bromleycma.org.uk - they have a huge amount of information on policies/procedures/planning/eyfs etc. You will find on here a list of items you must have in your first aid box. You should also have a list of notifiable diseases which you can also find on this website.

Do you both have emergancy plans in place? Escape routes etc? Do fire drills with your mindees? Record the drills and checks made on your smoke alarms etc I have a plan of my house with all smoke alarms/carbon monoxide alarms/fire blankets etc marked on it with all escape routes.

There is no reason why you couldn't get an outstanding - go for it! Let me know if you think of anything else...and please let me know how you both get on!

buggylovinmummy · 05/01/2010 11:07

Thanks Allthe8s

My mindees are 2.5 years and 1 year and i have my own little boy who is 3.5 years.

If you could give me the website addresses for activities that would be great as sometimes i do struggle to find something different to do and end up just getting the paints out again.

I've just heard that I'll be inspected on 25th Jan and I'm not even half-way through my SEF. I thought I had til March to prepare, so I'd better get organised!

On the side the lady seemed lovely and reassuring, but now I'm worried that that was just to lull me into a false sense of security!

leeloo1 · 05/01/2010 19:12

Oh and I was told it wasn't like the 1st inspection when they asked loads of questions, but that she'd stay for about 2 hours and would just sit in the corner and watch me get on with it all!

... would it be wrong to get her to join in with the songs?

atworknotworking · 05/01/2010 19:37

All of the inspections I have had have been very positive experiences, not met any horned people yet LOL.

Most stay for about 2-3 hrs, put all your paperworky type stuff out ready and point them in the right direction, apart from that just carry on as you would anyway, they observe a lot and ask questions if they want to know / clarify anything. Often they join in with the activity and interact with the mindees too, it's nice if you introduce the mindees to the inspector (put a name tag on). Don't be afraid to ask them any questions as well they have some great ideas from all of the settings they see and are quite happy to share.

Good luck!
