Umm make sure all your EFYS stuff is up to date and you have a plan with how to deal with 2 under 1s.

are you due an inspection? or is it just for a visit? make sure you have all your risk assessments upto day and included details of how you will ferry the children from a to b safely (with the twins)
make sure all your policys are up to date and you have the new ofsted number in them (ends in 404040)

It is just a visit but they are coming because I haven't had my first proper inspection yet. I've done the things you suggested, I'm just nervous. I don't know how likely they are to say yes.

Good luck just show them you have thought about your day with two little ones re getting about, feeding, sleeping, occupying them etc. Risk assessments and that.

ittlepurpleprincess I'm watching this with interest as I'm a new childmnder and I'm applying for a variation for 2 under 1's too.

I assume they will ask you stuff about logistics so make sure you have thought it through. ie. How will you get them both in the car (I read on another forum that someone got a variation rejected because she had to leave 1 child in the house, down some steps, to get to her car). Also stuff like how will you feed them, where will they sleep, what if one is crying and you're changing a nappy? What about messy play etc etc.

If you have any experience of managing 2 under 1's get some references from those parents.

Also as you're new make sure you have everything to do with paperwork to show the current children in your care are being well looked after as you will need to satisfy this (I assume) before they let you have any more.

So observations, risk assessments, planning and planning for each individual child, contracts, policies, procedures, permissions, a first aid kit, contact book/diary/notice board. I suppose the next important thing would (logically) be how you communicate with parents, so make sure you can demonstrate how you will achieve this.

As long as these core things are being met I would imagine that other tiny things (like have a log of temp of fridge, keeping a register, doing a reflective log etc) would be less important. They may tell you you need to do x, Y & z but that so long as you start to do it soon the variation will be allowed. Hope that makes sense?

As I say I'm a new childminder and have never had an inspection so am just going on what I assume would happen logically - but Ofsted aren't the most logical bunch so who knows!

Can you come back and let me us know how you got on? Good Luck!

good luck, sure will be fine..

Littlepurpleprincess · 12/12/2009 09:39

It was easy tbh. She just asked how would I get around, where would I change them, my past experience. They asked nothing about my paperwork etc. She asked about health and safety which I've got covered anyway because I've got DS and just advised me to review my risk assessments.
