i am starting to review my policies and procedures and am wondering what should be in a 'safeguarding children policy'.

Is it a new name for the child protection policy?

or do we need to have both?

Its all so confusing, anyone have any idea??

any help much appreciated!

thank you

Safeguarding is CP plus other bits & pieces - it's more than CP so I think it includes non-collection/lost child etc

But I could be wrong

check your statutory wotsit in your EYFS folder

childmindermk · 06/12/2009 19:56

Thanks Katymac i thought it might be but wasnt sure.

Numberfour i will have a look in the EYFS book wotsit, thanks.

I also cross reference my Safeguarding policy with Health and Safety/Risk Assessment.

Dont you have have something about if a child makes an allegation against you. As CMs are working alone with children.

Katymac · 07/12/2009 16:50

Yes but that should have been in your CP policy anyway

childmindermk · 07/12/2009 18:53

Yes i do have things about allegations against me etc, but was just really wondering if child protection was now called safeguarding children and what else safeguarding covers that should also be in the policy.

Thanks for your replies.

I don't really think you need a safe guarding children policy per se do you?

You just need to fulfil the bits that come under welfare in EYFS?

Have a nose here. Reading it, it does mention a safeguarding child policy but I think that is more of an umbrella term to encompass child protection, risk assessments, non collection of a child, equal ops etc.

On my list of policies I have basically linked each policy to each area of EYFS so hopefully you don't need a specific child protection policy?

I hope?!?! It's just a bit broader that child protection IMO. maybe?

childmindermk · 08/12/2009 07:42

I agree navyeyelash but feel i just want to have my policies set out how OFSTED want to see them as they only seem to put recommendations on my inspection reports about paperwork, or policies etc and with my next inspection due in January thought i would make a start on them and this time hopefully not miss anything out they may be expecting to see!
Thanks for the link, will have a read of that when i get a moment!

You definately need a safeguarding children policy, you will get an action against you if you haven't got one, you also should now be going on safeguarding and child protection courses or updating if you have already been on one.

navyeyelasH · 08/12/2009 22:04

danthe4th - what would a safeguarding children policy say?

navyeyelasH · 08/12/2009 22:18

Looking at the Bromley childminding website safeguaring children policy here i does look like a child protection policy.

In fact the file name is even child protection policy - so my guess is, what was child protection is now safeguarding children as per the buzz words used in the welfare requirements section of EYFS.

I disagree with Danthe4th that not having a specific labelled Safeguarding Children policy will lead to an action against you (assuming you're in England). Having some sort of policy to demonstrate that you have protocal to follow if you suspect a child is being abused or if you are acused of abused should be enough - it doesn't matter what it's called.

Surely?

If you really do have to have a speific Safeguarding Children Policy - that's stupid
