Part-time nannies - what are usual hours?

What hours/days do part-time nannies usually work, or is there no real standard? I am thinking of hiring a part-time nanny from 7 or 8am to 3pm Mon- Fri, and I am wondering if I will find a lot of applicants for this time slot?

Also, how do part-time nannies generally fill the remainder of their time? Are they usually studying? Holding another job? Or just having free time? Am curious.

It depends what you mean by part-time. In theory I am a part-time nanny as I work 4 days a week but over that 4 days I do 40 hours which if I was still working in the Civil Service would be called full-time.

7am-3pm is 8 hours, so with it being 5 days a week, it's 40 hours a week. So is that part-time or full-time? I'd argue that it's full-time as it's 5 days a week, rather than less than 5 days a week.

Probably best to advertise it as a 5-Days Per Week Nanny Position 7am-3pm. That way candidates know the days and hours. If the ad-system being used wants to be told that it's part-time or full-time, try to select both!

I like working 4 days a week as it gives me a longer weekend. On days-off I do various things, sometimes I may be going to a theme park or model railway exhibition with a child with autism whom I babysit, or I go to the local Spa for a sauna, or like today I go to the cinema.

Make sure you agree a Gross salary with the nanny, should they decide to get other work, though I'd have thought it unlikely that they would given that you are likely to offer 40 hours a week.

A lot of nannies work 8-6 or so, Monday-Friday, so you're only offering 10 hours less than full-time which is doable.

It may suit someone who has an evening class or children at schoo. Or possibly someone with an after-school nanny job.

7am - 3pm is like 9am - 5pm, how on earth would I fit another job around it lol, it would be more than sufficient for me!

nannynick · 01/12/2009 00:27

juneybean - there are ways trust me though I'm not quite such a work-a-holic any more.

With 24-hour shopping, it's quite possible that a nanny working 7am-3pm could do say 4pm-9pm at a supermarket. Mind you, not sure they would want to! Expect a nanny would far prefer to do the occasional bit of babysitting than work in a supermarket.

juneybean · 01/12/2009 08:36

Oh no I meant if I wanted a social life lol!

Just can't believe people think 40 hours is part time

frakkinaround · 01/12/2009 13:14

juney some nannies are crazy enough. Or have been with a family for years and stay on as an afterschool nanny but want a daytime job!

Also bear in mind we're used to working 8-6 if not longer!

I've never really worked less than 12 hours a day, either straight nannying or nannying combined with full time uni... one day I would love to work a 37.5 hour week that seems to be the norm here... I fear that before that happens I will be jumping on the 24/6 bandwagon to earn enough money to pay off said uni.

frakkinaround · 01/12/2009 18:26

24/6 is an excellent way to pay off uni. No more student loan for me! Was the most satisfying day of my life when I called up and paid the last bit off.

thenewbornnanny · 01/12/2009 21:10

I'll bet I owe a scary amount, cannot wait to pay it all off. One more year in my current job, and the OCN MNT practitioner course, and then my 5 year plan kicks in... and then I'll nearly be old enough to retire LOL

mumintroll · 02/12/2009 00:26

Thanks all. Yes I know 7am to 3pm is 40hrs/week, it occurred to me as I hit submit, but as has been pointed out, some people will add another job onto that.

[oops would write more but baby just woke up - thanks all.]

you may find an after school nanny who needs to fill in morning+early afternoon

you may be better off having someone for 3 whole days rather than 8hrs 5 days
