How do you handle holidays for nannys?

Just wondering what the variations are for nanny holidays, and how nannys are paid for these holidays. Thanks all - I am learning a lot!

Legal minimum requirement is 5.6 weeks per year - pro-rata for part-time employees.

The usual way it seems to be worked out is 2 weeks nannies choice, 2 weeks the employers and then bank holidays on top of that.

If the employer takes more holiday on top of that then the nanny should be paid. You could ask the nanny to come in and do some nursery duties while you are away or you could just give her the extra time off as a bonus.

tbh i do try and take my holidays when my guys do - but as they only go away in school holidays, it really bumps up the price of going abroad for dh and i

just going 1 week later in september saves us £600

as nbee said it is usual for both to have 2weeks chocie each - i also get a week off at christmas

my family do go away more than their 2weeks and i get the time off and paif

Pay is as normal, unless nanny has to take more than her allocated amount of holiday in which case she can request unpaid leave (which the employer can refuse).

I usually get a couple of days where I don't have children but am working - sorting out toys/rooms etc - while my family is away.

two weeks our choice, two weeks nanny's, bank holidays on top, but in practice because i get decent holiday allocation a year (six weeks) she pretty much gets this too.
the weeks i am off and she's working if we are at home i will usually have her in for one day while i do something i cant do with ds (like get my haircut) and then just give her the rest of the time as paid holiday.
so she gets a good deal, which ensures goodwill when i want her to vary her hours occasinoally/stay late one night etc.

WE agree at the start of the contract what the holiday will be and write it into the contract. I do ask the nanny to work with the school schedule. However I am flexible if there is something important. For example, we had a nanny who was in her friends wedding in another country and so obviously we gave her that time even though it did not coincide with a school break. We had a nother nanny who wanted holiday when it suited her dad's work schedule but was a real pain for us. We declined that request. She resigned. Everyone happy.
