nanny in scotland need advice

My 5yr old twins are due to start school after the summer, they are currently with a childminder near my office but I am wanting someone to look after them in my house after school.
After much unsuccessful advertising I discovered that a friend of my niece is just about to finish her childcare course at college. Having known her and her family for over 20years I feel comfortable in employing her.
We have discussed in length what her duties would be, hours, pay etc but I am unsure as to what I the employer need to do next i.e. insurance, disclosure, paying taxe and ni

Any advise would be much appreciated

Not sure if the rules about disclosures are different in Scotland, but generally a private family can't apply for one - doesn't she have a police check through her college?

Make sure you agree a gross wage not a net one - makes everyone's lives simpler! You can do the payroll stuff yourself, or you can use a payroll company like nannytax who will do it all for you, issue payslips etc.

Write and sign a contract too!

As far as I am aware, you need to hire the nanny via an Agency (which is registered with the Care Commission) if you were wanting to use Tax Credits/Childcare Vouchers.
But if you don't need that... and if you don't need a Disclosure Scotland (though your neice may already have that, via college - or could get one by registering with a nanny agency and paying a fee) then you may not need to go through an agency.
Tax legislation in Scotland I think is the same as in England, so you would need to operate PAYE deducting your employees income tax and NICs, plus paying Employers NICs. HMRC do a lot of this online now, but if you really can't cope with it then you can use a payroll company, such as PAYEforNannies.
Insurance wise, a domestic employee is usually covered as part of your home insurance - contact your insurer for details.
Your neice could get public liability insurance via www.mortonmichel.com

She has a Discolsure Cert from college but I am not sure how often that needs to be updated, if its every year or just with a change of employer...?
Il check out my house insurance and get in touch with a payroll company. Oh and gross wages has been agreed.

The disclosure cert should be updated with each change of employer. However as a parent you can't get that check done yourself... so it is entirely up to you if you will accept the previous check.

As the parent I know of at least one agency in Scotland who will register nannies for the purpose of disclosures and tax things (I think those are the main kind of reasons) as long as the nanny meets specific criteria re qualifications?

Try googling nanny agencies in Scotland.

Would recommend the three that I know of in Scotland,

A&H
Glasgow Childcare
West of Scotland

Couldn't recommend one and not the others.
