Hi everyone!
I am a primary school teacher (Early Years specialist) and soon to be childminder - just need to attend a paediatric first aid course at the end of the month as my certificate has recently expired and then I'm ready! I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice about finding children to mind - although I obviously won't start til I am registered I would like to get the ball rolling especially as parents obviously like to make childcare arrangements well in advance to ensure a smooth transition for children etc. I have already advertised on Netmums and a few free ad websites but haven't had any luck yet! Any advice or tips would be really appreciated!
Many thanks
Lauren

Hi I started last September. Done so much since then.

Here are some suggesions

I got one of my mindees via the local school. I think most school have a list of childminders available to that school. You need to decide which school you would like to be available to. May be wise not to take on more than one school. I think you may receive this form when you actually start.

I attend a childminding group, run within one of the childrens centre. We have our own notice board for advertising.

The fact that you are a primary school teacher will draw many people to you. Dont be afraid to advertise thats your previous area.

Via the Childrens Information Service online.

You will find that other childminders will give you more advice via mumsnet also.

Best wishes in your new job.

Hello! I am also just registered

I have just got my first mindee, he is the child of a friend from school. I have had other casual enquiries through school and another through another childminder I know. I have seen leaflets left at toddler groups and my cm friend said to get involved with the cm network as other cms will recommend you if they get an enquiry they cannot fill. Tell everyone you know as a lot of it seems to be word of mouth.

Go to your local cm drop-in and get to know other cms. They will start to pass enquiries your way once they know you.

Go on the Vistaprint website and design your own free business cards - you only pay for p/packaging. They also do postcards, t-shirts, pens, stationary - not all free all of the time but once you've bought, they'll send you regular offers. JUST DON'T EVER,EVER FILL IN ANY QUESTIONNAIRES THEY SEND YOU . Previous thread on this - you'll find yourself 9.95 out of pocket every month .

Carry business cards with you - I hand mine out at playgroups and even in the school playground.

Asvertise in your baby clinic if they have a notice board.

Post Office noticeboard.

I think NCMA website also has info on advertising that you can download free.

Good luck - you'll find that once you get started most future business will come grom recommendations

Hi everyone!
Thanks so much for all your suggestions - I have made contact with another childminder who is nearly full and she has taken my number and said she is happy to pass my details onto any parents/carers - so thats a start!
I'll definitely be taking all of your tips and fingers crossed I should have some little ones to mind by June.
Many thanks again
Lauren
