just wondering. Recently 2 of my mindees have recieved hospital treatment for minor accidents at home (not on my watch, thank goodness.)
I felt awful logging this and asking the parents to sign the book, I felt like a right busy body.
Noone has had a really bad bump in my setting but toddlers do fall over, I do log most of these incidents but hand on heart not all. what do you guys do?

I certainly don't check each child's body for things on arrival, I just don't have the time with the manic mornings!!! Anyway, it doesn't protect the child, it's for MY protection that I log those. If it's obvious or parents mention an accident then yes, I log those but that's it. With bumps at my house, I log them but if a child is CONSTANTLY falling over etc (I have one at the moment), I only log them if they are worse than a little bump iyswim.

HTH

thanks that really does, I have logged a few bumps in my setting really just to show Ofsted.. I mean if I was really worried about a childs safety and suspected abuse then i wouldnt be pissing around logging endless marks I would be screaming down the phone to social services..

Exactly!!

If they have a bump or bruise when they arrive I ask them to record it in the child's before they arrive & we both sign it

looneytune · 14/05/2009 13:04

Katy - I do that if notice something but do you actually check their body i.e. under clothes and stuff before you let the parents leave?

looneytune · 14/05/2009 13:05

Sorry, re-read - do you mean in child's diary? That's an idea but quite often parents forget or don't mention.

KatyMac · 14/05/2009 14:00

I make them sign to say that they will & if they forget I stand over them while they write it when they get back

Just been on my Safeguarding Childrens Course- not the most fun training to date.

But you must NEVER remove a childs clothes unless for minding purposes ie changing nappies, or clothes if they are dirty, or you could be in trouble yourself. If you find bruises/marks on a childs body you have to justify how you saw them. I know most of us change the children regularly as our charges are generally little ones, but apparently it can be a sticking point if it every got serious.

I record nearly all my bumps, scratches etc as its for my benift as well as the child.

Interesting.....what about bathing the children? I've done this before and I do for overnight stays sometimes.

If we can't look under clothes then how are we supposed to look out for signs of abuse.
Some parents who abuse know how to hurt their kids without leaving a mark
