I am a qualified nursery nurse and have 2 children 5 and 3. Can my friend employ me as a nanny, in her house, when i will be looking after my own children also? Should i register with ofsted so she can claim her childcare vouchers?

is she going to pay your tax/NI etc? don't think it will qualify for childcare vouchers as it is in her home - we never could, but i don't know legally how it works... you can be ofsted reg in your house, but not in employers i think...

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2009 15:31

yes you can

and yes being with ofsted will save her money

though do be careful working for her - i personally think friends and family and business dont always work out

if you disgareed with something workwise-would you lose each others frendship?

don't think it matters whether your children are there or not. usually private arrangement between employer and nanny.

madwomanintheattic · 07/05/2009 15:32

oh
ignore me...

should have added - obv only if your friends employer/work uses the voucher scheme

She will have to pay my tax etc. But it will only be for one day a week. I thought you could register any area of childcare and if i registered then she should be able to qualify for childcare vouchers?

from what i gather

you can use the vouchers to pay a cm or nursery or a nanny in the employers own home

but only if her work place support it - not all companies support the scheme - my mb doesnt - so we didnt see the point in her paying for me to be ofstead reg

though obv i have a crb and first aid and i pay mm for nanny insurance

just looked at nannytax lol - they have a guide. it looks as though it is all fine

sorry for causing alarm - i think maybe neither my nor dh's employer was registered lol. it was a while ago...

There really isn't any problems with you doing this. You (and your friend) need to you be in England, as there are different rules for Wales, Scotland, NI etc. Assuming you are in England, then you register with Ofsted under Part B of The Childcare Register and once you have your registration number, you provide that to your friend so that they can tell their voucher provider whom they will be paying.

Your friend should keep in mind what I always recommend to anyone employing a nanny, that is that the salary MUST be agreed GROSS. This is particularly important for non-full-time jobs. At a later date you may decide to do additional work and that work will affect your tax circumstances, so could affect the deductions in your job working for your friend.
As long as you don't have any additional job (or other income) at present, then your friend should be able to use the Simplified PAYE method for doing Tax/NI/employers NI.
