OK - so it's my birthday & I had to ask the vet to put one of my chickens down

& samples have to be sent off to see if it wasinfected with anything

So I did a risk assessment, do you think this will do?

  1. Taken to the vet, samples taken before the chicken died. Vet assured me that the chicken was only recently ill and may be non-bacterial in origin.
  2. Stringent cross-contamination precautions to be taken: *use disposable gloves when handling chickens, coop or eggs *use designated apron when handling chickens, coop or eggs; to be removed & stored safely before entering the setting. *no home produced eggs to be used in the setting.
  3. Once results are known, further tests on remaining chickens to be taken if there is any risk. If there is no risk normal cross-contamination precautions to be taken. *wash hands after touching chickens, coop or eggs with hot soap & water. Supervise young children as necessary.

I had a chicken die right in the middle of the Avian Flu thingy! Gave parents a letter explaining what actions/precautions I had taken. (This followed the previous letter about not allowing them out free range with the children for a while).

I had to explain to the mindees once that one of our hens had been taken by a fox. I was very and they were full of questions about the big bad wolf! (parents involved of course)

KatyMac · 06/05/2009 20:07

DH & DD are still eating potentially infected chicken eggs on the basis of......they are fully cooked

Sorry to hear about your chicken Kate

Do you normally use the eggs your chickens lay in your setting? If so are Ofsted ok with this?
Just wondering as mil has chickens and I've never been brave enough to give them to mindees.

Thanks so much for your sef it still took me about 10 hrs to do mine, it made my brain ache.

Happy Birthday hope your other chicken are ok.

skankywitch · 06/05/2009 21:14

Ps your risk assessment is spot on as usual.

KatyMac · 06/05/2009 21:21

OFSTED thought it was lovely (both times)

I did get initial chickens tested for salmonella tho' but the new ones were from a play farm so I assumed (pratt aren't I) that they were innoculated (actually the bloke said they were)

Ofsted are very happy about the children collecting eggs and eating them. We do of course do washing eggs and hands and correct cooking too. (I'm sure I'll get the egg phobic inspector next time)

skankywitch · 07/05/2009 19:47

Thanks Katymac and HSMM that's great to know.
