bank holidays

i have a question concerning bank holidays. i am new and i don't know how to charge for them. if i am unavailable parents (quite rightly) treat it as a day off and see no reason to pay however, people working in eg offices get paid for these days although they do not come to work. if i were available though, how much should i charge? i am completely lost. help!!!

This is difficult but do people in offices etc not have to work harder Tue - Fri to get through the work which should have been done on the B Hol Monday (Hence getting paid because they are doing the work anyway?)

emmaduriez · 04/05/2009 22:41

I state in my policies and contracts that Im closed but I Charge full price for that day
Hope that helps
Emma
ps i do say to parents that if they have to work I can mind their child/children but it would be extra

KatyMac · 04/05/2009 22:41

I doubt it - it is part of their holiday entitlement

Bonneville · 04/05/2009 22:42

But does anyone get double pay for working a bank holiday these days?

TheFallenMadonna · 04/05/2009 22:43

It isn't about whether other people get paid for them. If you are available to work, and would be happy for children to be left with you on that day, then you are entitled to charge, although it would probably be best to spell it out in your contract. If you aren't available, then unless it is spelt out in your contract I would think it would be unreasonable to charge. What does your contract say?

littledaisys · 05/05/2009 00:37

i use the greenwich council contract and it does not state clearly wheteher it should be paid or not and how much.
i heard that the new ncma contract expalin the situation a bit but i haven't seen it yet, have you?

I do not work it but charge half fees (holiday fees)
In 15 yes, no parent has ever queried it.
If the parent is desperate for care, I would charge double fees.

mrspnut · 05/05/2009 07:09

People who are paid for bank holidays are usually employed. CM's are self employed and therefore either have to make allowances in their fees to cover bank holidays or not get paid it.

I have refused over the years to pay for occasions when my childminder is not available, because I am not their employer.

HSMM · 05/05/2009 07:44

I am not available bank holidays (would never want to work them) so I do not charge. If I was available to work, then I would charge.

Tabbykat · 05/05/2009 08:00

What HSMM said!
It is entirely up to you, and whatever you put on your conttact - but you do need to be clear.

sunnyshine · 05/05/2009 08:01

i dont work them so dont charge, it states in my contract if i do work ie asked by parent it is extra charges ie £8 instead of £5.

Shoshe · 05/05/2009 08:19

As someone said, you can put what eve you want in your contract, its your business, just make sure it is clear whether you want to be paid or not and how much .

AND make sure your parents kno whatever you put before they sign.

I as asked by somebody recently disputing paying their CM for Bank Holidays, they asked me what I thought, my reply was it was up to the CM, but if the mother had signed, then the contract stood.

Th Parents should have disputed it before they signed, so make sure everything is very clear form the outset.

littledaisys · 05/05/2009 10:05

thank you very much. it is just that parents want to dispute the contract as if it was negatiable, but it shouldn't be, right?

Shoshe · 05/05/2009 10:43

My contracts are non negotiable

If Parents don't agree to my terms, then they are free to go else where.

Saying that I live in an area with few CM's and I have a high and longstanding rep, so have never had a space.

long way ahead of me. i just started!!!!!
