Not sure what you can do really other than trying to advertise yourself wherever possible. Try websites like Gumtree.com and other regional things (I'm not in London, but I expect there must be other listings sites). Also look locally at newsagents type places to see what local classified ads they have, plus see if it is worth paying to advertise yourself.

Make yourself a website, then advertise it everywhere you can.

Make some cards and get them put up everywhere you can.

Ivykaty44 · 03/05/2009 17:49

I was thinking of the fact you could offer to babysit and talk your own tonge as this may appeal to some families who want their children to talk other langauges.

Do you want to work or is it pure bordem that you want something to do?

You may make freinds if you volunteer and do this at the weekend, soem volunteer work could be with children - you would need to have a police check for this - but the charity will normally pay for this to be done.

There is weekend work out there but many parents still use agencies think the best thing to do is advertise yourself on every website possible www.childcare.co.uk, www.netmums.co.uk, www.nannyjob.co.uk and also register with the agencies some parents just wont even look privately.

I am an ad-hoc nanny as work full time and do get majority of work privately but this is because I have a large number of references and qualifications but I do still get some work through agencies.

It doesnt cost to register with agency and have nothing to lose by registering only everything to gain so to speak!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/05/2009 18:37

Why werent you happy with the agencies?

I do a lot of weekend/pp work - Most of my work comes through word of mouth, but often i get calls from my local agencies asking if i am free

best thing to do is to put up ads on gumtree/netmums and Nj advertising yourself,as well as cards in newsagents etc

mojenko · 03/05/2009 19:35

thank you all for your help i would try some more agencies

blondeshavemorefun where are you based?

kent, though i travel travel for nice famillies to the big smoke - they pay my travelling time there and back

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/05/2009 20:08

do travel - not travel travel

lindseyfox · 04/05/2009 11:46

def worth registering with the agencies.

sleepyeyes · 04/05/2009 12:03

TBH I wouldn't say your age is the problem I'm in my 20's and never had a problem finding nanny jobs in London.

I would say a really well written CV is one of the best ways to get interview for jobs if your replying to ads on Gumtree and nannyjob.

nannynick · 04/05/2009 13:39

You don't seem to mention childcare qualifications. Is that perhaps what is limiting you in finding work, through agencies.

Littlepurpleprincess · 04/05/2009 14:38

Don't let your age hold you back! I'm a childminder and I'm only 20! Hasn't put anyone off yet. It's qualifications people want, and experience.
