I am wondering and hoping someone can answer my questions....

How much would you charge a 2 yr old from 7am - 7.30pm per day?

How much would you charge for meals/ snacks per day?

If you had to travel to a pre school how much do you charge for milage?

Do any of you go over on your numbers? and are you allowed to do this for emergency cover?

Thanks in advance for helping me.

I charge the same rate and that's £4ph but it depends on your area. Have a look at this link, put in your postcode and you can see what others charge in your area.

I don't charge for meals or snacks, I put as expenses on my tax return.

I don't think you're allowed to charge for mileage, something to do with being like a taxi. You need to write all your mileage down and charge the mileage to the tax man!

I never go over my numbers but THINK you may be allowed in a PROPER emergency. Someone else may be able to confirm this?

This is all too open ended

Are we talking childminding or nannying?....Oh Childminding I guess
What area (london prices are different to Milton Keynes) But I'd charge double before 7:30 & after 6pm

I wouldn't charge for snack or meal it's in my hourly fee

You can't charge mileage as it might invalidate your insurance as you are 'for hire' as a taxi - check your policy

No- in 6 yrs I have never been over my numbers & you would only do it in a life threatening emergency cover situation

Oh yeah, like Katy I charge more before 8am and after 6pm. I charge £4.50ph at those times.

Some Childminders do charge for transportation - between 40p-60p per mile I've noted. Some don't especially if they are travelling past the child's house or going to the same school/preschool for their own children. Best to check with your insurance provider (get in writing that your policy provides cover for your business as a childminder transporting other peoples children). As long as you are only transporting mindees who are contracted to be in your care you should not be counted as a taxi because you're not available to the general public. However, this was under review a while back, as some bright sparks think ALL childminders should register as taxis if they use their car for childminding. But currently AFIK its ok, because parents can't just ring up and book a lift for their child; the transport is part of the childminding service. Just like any other extra like meals, snacks, etc. You can work out a transportation fee and include this in your daily fee for that child if you prefer to do it that way.

I charge separately for meals, I prefer to give parents the choice of bringing their own or booking my meals. They can book/cancel the week before.

I wouldn't take a 2 year old from 7 am to 7:30 pm. I will agree to start earlier than 8 OR finish after 6 (most charge from 1.5 - 2 x hourly rate for unsocial hours) but I don't agree to open longer at both ends of the day.

You should never go over your numbers except in a dire emergency. eg, you or a child is being carried off in an ambulance. You should write an emergency procedure advising parents what might happen. If you go over numbers you must notify Ofsted what has happened, so they can see you made a judgement in the best interests of the children under the circumstances. confirm your telephone conversation in writing/email. Contact your insurance provider to explain & tell them you notified Ofsted. If you are ever over numbers your insurance will be invalid, but if you've kept them in the loop you might be okay in the event of a claim.

Thanks everyone for being so helpful.

Would £8 per day be too much to charge for food?

Thanks for the insurance tips, interesting reading!

That's a huge amount for food! I could get by on £8 per day for food - I actually get by on less than that.

LittlePaws · 30/04/2009 15:48

I wouldn't pay a childminder £8 a day for food for a 2 year old.

I care for a two year old and he doesn't eat anywhere near £2 of food a day.
