We are currently on income support and have been thinking about childminding.

Is it possible for us to both do it from our home together? (but have seperate children each, different outings, playtime etc...)

And also, as we are on IS now would we get help with training fees? How does training work?Is it full time/ part time? From home or college etc?

Thanks

I don't know anything about it except that it is definitely possible because ds's first childminder was exactly this set-up, a husband and wife childminding together.

Why would you have separate children & do separate things

It's more hectic fun with 6

Training would be your ICP (called something else now) about 20 or so hours P/T evenings or weekends, your 12 hour peadiatric first aid (evenings & weekends again) & your food hygiene cert 1 day

It's all usually free - contact your local council

Thankyou,

I have no idea Katy, we are only just looking into it...

Are you at home together all the time now?

If so & you can cope with each other 24/7 then it might be an idea

How many under 5's & 5-8's do you have?
& how much is C/Ming in you area?

It's a good way to get off IS as you can work 30 hrs plus quite easily & there is a really good deal (which I don't know) about discounts/disregards for IS while you are starting up

My DH and I both used to be registered together. We were each allowed 6 under 8 (and our certificate specified 12 under 8 when minding together). We registered at different times and he no longer minds, but we didn't have any trouble. You do of course need to have enough space for all the children.

ThinkingOfCMing · 19/04/2009 20:34

Yes both at home now, we do get along but alot of frustration since weare on IS because theres no structure or focus.

We have 3 under 5, 1 will be in school full time, 1 playgroup 2hrs a day and baby under 1 at home.

No idea on price range in our area, but live in big city, manchester.

pop your post code in here to find the amounts other childminders in your area charge

Is the oldest in reception?

If so you could have (between you) a total of 4 under 5 of which 1 can be under 1, plus 5 between 5 & 8 if you have enough space

ThinkingOfCMing · 19/04/2009 20:57

Yes he will be starting reception sept.

Thanksfor helping me out

is that inc our own? Sorry where are the rates on that site?

No - your children will be extra - they will be the numbers you can childmind (once your child is in reception Full-time)

If you put your postcode in you get offered areas - you chose your area & then chose childminders

You should get a list & if you access each one you will get an idea of what your local charges are

Thankyou Katy, noone in my area seems to have any prices on their information pages though.

What is a rough average?

Thanks again for being so helpful x

You are joking!!!

In rural Norfolk I am expensive at £3.50 in London £5-8 can be normal

There isn't really a national average

ThinkingOfCMing · 19/04/2009 21:09

No, not one price.

i knew a couple doing this, but he no longer does it.

To find out prices, why don't you ring a few of them tomorrow and enquire from a parents prospective?

nannynick · 20/04/2009 00:08

If you google childminder manchester cost you will get some websites of childminders in the area. Having done some looking, few seem to list fees.
Atherton, MANCHESTER £3 per hour / £25 per day
Kiddywinks £3.25 per hour / £25 per day

Another thing to try is to contact Manchester Families Information Service and pretend to be a parent looking for childcare. Ask for the latest Childminder Vacancies list. Perhaps that may give some indication of fees.

It is a pain how some FIS/CIS don't list fees. Hope the new system when it kicks in will force people to list fees - bet it won't though!

nannynick · 20/04/2009 00:20

Worsley £4 per hour / £125 per week
Salford £5 per hour
Sale £30 per day
