That's it really. Obviously if they pass the requirements. So that the employer can get Childcare Vouchers.

Don't from the OFSTED side of things but from the immigration side of things, this would come under the self employment rules, from the ukba website:

You are only allowed to be self employed if:

  • you do not own permanent premises from which you do your business;
  • the total value of your equipment that you use in your business is not worth more than £5,000; and
  • you have no employees.

So seems to be OK

But as a nanny they wouldn't be S/E anyway....I guess?

Nanny would be an employee(not self employed) but I've not being able to find anywhere the answer and I've looked online for ages this morning. I'm just assuming it's fine as the nanny is legally able to work in this country.

Hmmmmm, not clear at all.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I've been wondering this as we have an Aus nanny, fully qualified, paed first aid etc coming to us in August. The things which struck me as making it complicated is that she'll need to have a uk crb check, whether her first aid cert will be accepted here and of corse the £100+ cost to us to sort it all out.

There is more info on some of the nanny tax websites but it doesn't say whether youth mobility visa holders will be included. I've been meaning to contact ofsted but haven't quite got around to it yet.

I'd be interested to know if you do get any more info.

Hmmm I don't want to go calling Ofsted as will be put on hold and messed around.

I assume it should be fine.

RE: the CRB check an overseas person can quite easily get one if they bring a copy of their police check from home - so no worries there.

Will let you no if I find out a definate answer.

The CRB website provides details about the various checks that can be obtained by those overseas who are coming to stay in the UK.
Guidance for Australians
Links to guidance for other countries can be found here.
Guidance for those with addresses Overseas - handy for anyone who has lived abroad in the last 5 years prior to completing the CRB paperwork.

With regard to First Aid, Ofsted say in Guide to Registration on the Childcare Register

Within Annex C:
"All training should be either approved by a local authority, the HSE or QCA, or provided by a reputable body, such as the Red Cross, St John Ambulance or St Andrew Ambulance."

So I suspect that First Aid courses done outside of the UK may be problematic. Annex C of the document linked above does include the criteria a course has to meet. Ofsted does not stipulate the course duration, so a short refresher course could be combined with the overseas full course perhaps - never know Ofsted may permit that.
