I posted an add on gumtree for a nanny/babysiter ect, and had this reply. Is it too good to be true? £850 a week for a school aged child with weekends off. Ideas people!

Hello,

Scam. Definitely.

Tas1 · 14/04/2009 20:52

I have seen this loads over the last few weeks on various chat rooms for childminders/nannies.

THIS IS A CON - BEWARE!!

warthog · 14/04/2009 20:57

what would they gain from it though?

Simplyme · 14/04/2009 21:01

scam!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is money laundering!

nannynick · 14/04/2009 21:12

Sounds like a scam to me.

Warning signs:

auto crash on the 17th of November 2008 last year in the States

High level of non-relevant detail, in my view.

I brought _ to the Philippines

Why are they mentioning that? Again it seems non-relevant to me.

we are relocating to the United Kingdom in the next two weeks to start a new life

Immigration may object to that! US citizens can't to my knowledge easily just relocate to the UK. I know some Americans post on this board, so they may be able to shed some light on how easy/hard it is to move from the US to the UK, especially if a US Citizen not a British National.

i am looking for a Good and a Friendly Nanny that will take very good care of __ as he is all i've got now.

Strange phasing in my view. Would someone really write that?

_ will be 7 years old on the 15th of May 2009 and i will be happy to have you as __'s NANNY

They haven't met you, interviewed you or know anything about you... and already they are offering you the job. Also why are they giving full DOB of their grandchild?

i am willing to pay £850 weekly

Very high rate of pay. Trying to get people to respond in my view. Bet the next e-mail will be along the lines of, I need to pay you x amount now in advance but need to transfer y amount to the UK, so can you take x amount out of y and send back z to another bank account.

all i want is a Nanny that will take very good care of My Boy

My Boy... they were using his name before, why not now?

Kindly get back to me if you are interested in the position.

They haven't told you about the position, only the large salary.

Thus I conclude... SCAM.

ChippingIn · 15/04/2009 00:51

My friend answered a similar ad with a family moving from America to the UK. They wanted to secure a nanny upfront before they moved so said they would pay her a retainer until the got there. They then asked for her bank details and said they would deposit money each week until they moved.
Luckily my friend isn't stupid and reported them to Gumtree.
It may be above board and this person has a lot of money and just wants her child settled but I'd be very careful before you commit to anything and never give out any personal information.
I have seen adverts for full nanny pay (not that much) when the children are at school all day but in the interview they then say they want you to do the weekly shop and various errands whilst the kids are at school, so you become more of mum's p.a or aupair.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/04/2009 11:20

a load of bollocks

but by all means reply and ask for a months salary upfront to secure the position

and obv via cheque or po - dont give out your account details/pasport number/send birth certicate etc

i get several of theses aweek - i also have managed to win a few million as well

aupair101 · 15/04/2009 12:22

Just an update, I did reply.. I mean, IF it is real, and they DO have a lot of money, why say no?!

The man wrote back and left 2 telephone numbers, although he did say he is better contacted by email, which is safer. I googled the numbers and one is a Philipines mobile and one is a Philipines landline, which goes with the story of him living in the Philipines.

We shall wait and see, I could be a very rich nanny... or simply lose nothing

(lose nothing because I am not stupid...)

Be very very careful aupar101. Dont take any risks.

theoriginalmummypoppins · 15/04/2009 12:28

Marypoppins2 I think what you describe is fairly normal for a nanny to school age children.Running errands a bit of shopping is usually helpful and welcomed in a busy household if you are being paid full time and the children are at school.

Best to be upfront about it though at interview with a job description rather than thinking it will just happen.

llareggub · 15/04/2009 12:28

If something sounds too good to be true, then it usually is. Steer clear.

ellingwoman · 15/04/2009 12:29

But why even feed these idiots? Of course it's a hoax. And why on earth would you want to work for someone who cares so little about the child they would hire you on the basis of an advert

annh · 15/04/2009 12:30

Aupair 101, how many people are going to have to tell you that this is a scam before you believe it?! There are jobs exactly like this one advertised all the time on Gumtree and other sites, it is one big con!

ButIForgetMyself · 15/04/2009 12:52

I loved my last scam job offer:

20 New Bond Street is actually the Louis Vuitton store.

I love morismonk!

You should never reply to these scams though. If they'd only contacted you through the Gumtree site, they will now have your email address. They'll send you all sorts.

AVOID!

SillyMillysMummy · 15/04/2009 13:30

I get these all the time from gumtree too. I remember reading somewhere that they paid some money to a cm, had the money refunded and then debited it back as well.

I just delete all like this from gumtree now

RachieB · 15/04/2009 13:40

lol i had the moris monk one too

and double lol @ "IF it is real..."

IF it is i will eat my hat ,any hat !

Nicadooby · 15/04/2009 17:48

Hi haha I've had this one too!!! and there are a couple more on childcare.co.uk

They really are a scam, they send you a cheque for too much money then ask you to send some of it back by a bank transfer but by the time you've done it the original cheque they sent you will bounce.

It's sad that some people will fall for it as they think they are on to a good thing.

Stilla · 16/04/2009 02:29

PixiNanny · 16/04/2009 14:02

It is quite fun to lead them on for a while sometimes. I had one conact me whilst I was looking for work and I kept 'em busy for hours, was very funny! But whenever I asked that they send me the money first they changed the subject. Hm... Of course, obviously real :p
